(What an unfortunate start date!)...

Any ideas to raise awareness of HT with the public and health services as a helpful treatment for IBS?

OK- those from across the pond and elsewhere too!
I've just realised I added 'UK' randomly.
Sorry about that! ;-P
Jesss.. For a moment there I had a negative hallucination and blanked out the I, ... "BS awarness month" (groan)

It's public awareness that 20% of the population have what they have that DOES need to be raised.

The medical profession doesn't want to deal with IBS; they can't resect it or control it easily!

The evidence is there in black and white. Written by 'one of them'.

We need to get people talking about IBS and accessing services that are there for them; as many people don't talk about their bowels. This means that they're not talking about their IBS... which means that they can be isolated as a result. :-(

It's not public awareness that we have to raise, imo.
We need to convince the medical profession that we can perhaps help, where they fail

How? Create creditability by arrange a mini-trial, perhaps? For instance, no GP likes to be encumbered with a frequent visiting patient that they cannot satisfy. Organised correctly, we have nothing to lose.

Just a thought ....

That was older advice, Scott.

Current evidence suggests a difference between soluble and insoluble fibre which is significant.

Hi All,

I've suffered from Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for years, the problem the advice given to treat it by the general medical profession not only does not work but aggravates it.

That advice being to consume more FIBRE, which gets recommend for nearly all gut disorderds despite there being several studies between 1976 and 1985, that showed no convincing effect of bran (fibre) on overall symptom patterns in IBS.

The evidence in fact points to bran fibre, wholemeal bread and wholemeal cereals, are more likely to cause IBS than they are to cure it. Fibre can also case flatulence, distension and abdominal pain.

The problem is that awareness days is they tend to peddle what is currently in vogue and with IBS its the unfounded belief that fibre is beneficial when the evidence suggest not.

I manage my own symptoms with peppermint tea after meals, hypnosis and reducing fibre from grains sources.

Warmest Regards

Scott
Who's arguing, pet?

Not sure what you meant by the value of GP referral. Who can't understand what?!

Slow down, lass .. you asked for ideas, not a F***ing argument! ;-)

(I have to wonder what is happening when someone cannot understand the value of a GP referral. They have done half the work for you ...)

Hi all, your reply to Henxy is a great example. Be a guest on a radio show and say exactly that. Use flyers or brochures and place an ad in the newspaper. Attend group meetings for free and ask to say a few words and invite members. Come up with a catchy slogan or campaign title and start letting people know. Good luck.

I realize you are employed by the MAN and I agree with Ian -- get the docs to recommend your program- any way! When a doctor makes an enthusiastic recommendation for your services: "Our hypnosis program for IBS is very effective" it will improve your attendance and patient outcomes -- .

Having Crohn's Disease I take a special interest in IBS. I look forward to seeing what develops here.

Hi Margaret.
Yup, got radio station at the ready, leaflets sorted, posters pending approval. Got a stand at either end of the territory booked, with all sorts of people involved, or prepared to be.
Seeing as we've got a bit of time before April, I really want it to be something that's GOING to happen, not an event that people heard that someone else walked past and noticed lasst week...
Thanks!

Hi Michael...
The MAN?! (I think we have a language difficulty here! ;-P ).
Due to the geographical limitations of my funding, I have to be careful about reaching out nationally; as this will only serve to highlight the tricky situation that some people are covered and others aren't, purely due to where their GP sugery is. I've got the local contacts sorted though; so most people who are exposed to any form of our advertising will be entitled to get the free 'treatment' (I use the term advisedly).
GPs are 'too busy' to attend talks/presentations, even in their surgeries (apparently); but patients and the public is where I'm going with starting this thread.
Docs are supposed to be referring and thereby recommending... They're just 'too busy'... Patients in the programme are 100% attenders, which is brilliant (I have a colleague with a 20% DNA rate). Other than the 1 patient, they're all making great progress.

It's just letting people know that this service is here, that their problem has solutions and that they're not required to sit in silence; ashamed and embarrassed.
