IBS Hypnotherapy on the NHS...free at the point of delivery...It's immoral?!

I've just had a phonecall from a hypnotherapist who thinks my service is running private practitioners out of business, and as such is unfair and immoral, and the clients/patients will suffer as a result.

I was told that the caller doesn't like people giving hypnosis away free, paid for through taxpayers' money and not chargeable to the client personally, or at a rate of £25 (not sure of the relevance of that figure) because it devalues hypnosis.

The caller thought I was being immoral and unfair to clients and hypnotists alike, and didn't agree that they could apply for any further jobs which come up on the NHS (they were concerned about services like mine 'springing up all over the place').

They were rather concerned that services like mine would run them out of business, and were at pains to tell me that they were investing lots of money in their education.

I pointed out that IBS has a prevalence of up to 20% in any population, and that NHS services follow NICE guidelines (which leaves private practitioners a whole year to see these people before any NHS service would interfere), and as such, there would never be sufficient NHS hypnotherapists to help all those who require it, leaving plenty for private practice both before and after NHS interventions.

My priority is the patient; first and always. What's theirs, do you think?

Oh and P.S. The research which people refer to for credibility in private work was done by NHS clinicians... Perhaps it's immoral to charge for it at all? (Goes and sulks for being accused of badness!).
Profit, profit, profit.

Henxy I agree with your stance, I could never hope to get through all the peeps in South Hampshire that have IBS, however I would like the NHS to advertise, with some of their 'squillions' of dosh that hypnotherapy works for IBS (especially when it is done properly, symptom severity is measured at the initial appointment and end stage and the client comes first not the Therapist's ego or bank account)...

If the NHS advertised this for me, at no cost to myself, I would be very happy as no matter what happens at the election the NHS probably will not have the necessary resources to deliver hypnotherapy for IBS - they already don't pay for it down in 'Dampshire' (and boy was/is it damp yesterday/today)...

So please, NHS, spend some taxpayers' money, and help peeps with IBS, and their ethical Hypnotherapists, and get your GPs to tell the population that IBS can be significantly helped with hypnotherapy!

Thank you NHS... (and shut up small minded Hypnotherapists)....just a little thought...if his/her argument was correct why do BUPA and PPP exist for general healthcare/major surgery????
Indeed, my friend. Such advertising would make my job a lot easier!

I guess the problem for justifying that great cost for advertising would also be seen to advocate those unethical bods who jump on the coat tails of the decent sorts (our colleague who has his www.fixyouribs.com website, for example).

The answer re BUPA & PPP? This person's not competing with them, so their patient/client related ethics don't extend to surgery! ;-)
Ahhh..... I see what you mean, Henxy, but I suppose they could link it to the NHS CAMs Directory members...should keep the majority of wolves such as 'fixxy ...owww...ribs' quiet....I am sure they don't meet the criteria for membership...such as GHR membership as a minimal qualification, preferably Medical and Dental Hypnosis.....

And yes Hypnos should remember that the NHS basically funded the research that created the evidence that created the NICE Clinical Guidelines that created the opportunity to earn more money from treating IBS, I don't know of 1 Hypno that treats IBS that doesn't mention NICE Guidelines in the UK ....

I quote Prof Whorwell et al many times, without their work I would be a much poorer therapist (in skills terms) ...I love treating IBS, the results are usually amazing and it is so great to see peeps getting their lives back!

BUPA will pay for hypnotherapy for IBS...but so long as you have references from consultants who have been referring peeps to you for over 2 years...chicken and eggs...well at least that was the situation last time I looked....

This person cites a certain Mancunian as their source of inspiration, and perceives them to be a god of IBS hypnotherapy... That same god that I believe you weren't all that impressed with the teachings of...
But IMMORAL? MOI?!
'Allegedly', Henxy, allegedly!!!!!

Nope wasn't impressed, missed the point and too complex, not client or gut orientated...and a complex proforma to follow to listen to the recorded sessions...Gut Orientated Therapy is far more efficacious!

You'll have to explain this scary thing some point (preferably not in a big long thread where everyone finds out why/how!).
