Hello all,

I have always used ideomotor signalling (via finger lift) with my clients for yes/no answers, and at times have used the head nod. I prefer to use the finger lift as I find it is a good convincer, and have heard that it gives better access to the subconscious mind. I know that a head nod accomplishes the same thing, but everyone does that all the time. I sometimes will have them speak in hypnosis but my most of clients prefer not to talk in hypnosis as most find it bothersome.

So what do you use the most of these? Or do you use something else?

A peculiar example of using the finger lift happened the other day in a smoking cessation. It was the end of the session and I was using an arm catelepsy as a sort of symbol for letting go of remaining urges and reasons to smoke. I asked my client's subconscious mind to put all remaining reasons, urges, excuses, ect for smoking into the right arm, and once it had done so it would let me know by having the left index finger lift. So eventually the finger lifted. Then I asked that if it was ready to let it go to lift the finger again. Right away the finger lifted. No suprises there. However after the session my client asked me why I had asked her to put her finger down when she had never lifted it. I told her that her finger did rise, twice, but she told me she didn't lift it, and didn't even feel it move.

I would say that this is a good example of the subconscious mind communicating through ideomotor signalling, even without the conscious mind knowing. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any insight into this?

Thank you,

Josh

Yes,

It happens all the time.

As a person becomes involves in hypnosis, the proprioceptive system often stops working as well.

So they can not tell whether the finger has lifted or not. (but they often feel it touching down again)

this can lead to doubts as to how well the treatment is working.

I always make a point of asking how it felt when the finger lifted...

if they say they were not sure if it lifted or not,

I ask them if they felt it touching down again afterwards.

they invariably say yes.

I say well if  it came back down it must have been up..

they realise the truth in what I am saying.

If still any doubt..

I then ask the unconscious (or whatever term I have used with them)

to lift it again to show that it worked.

with eyes open they watch the finger lifting, and I then re itterate the key points.

and reasure them that they are responding well.

(this happened today)

Thank you Fable, the advice will be well used.

The finger thing that happened with this client is very common. When I'm hypnotized, sometimes I start to lose sensations in my fingers and hands and feel like they are in air but in reality they are resting on my sides.

If you want to use another indicator of unconscious responses I encourage you to use blushing. Dave Elman used to tell his clients that when they lie as he is regressing them, they will blush. And because blushing is a pure unconscious response, they have no control over it, so it's very accurate.
I suggest you use it not just in detecting lies, which can be unethical in certain cases, but use this tool as your advantage (maybe with some right hand heating up for yes, and the left one for no).
