Induction for anxious person! Looking for Comments / Thoughts.

Saw a client this past Saturday. She suffers from anxiety. I started out doing the Elman on her. She took deep deep breaths throughout the induction, tossed and turned. Refused to loose the numbers. So I switched over to Seven plus or Minus Two induction - which worked better due to her anxious nature. BUt all in all it was not a good session for her. She just could not relax her mind.

What would be a better method to working with people like this, that simply refuse to allow themselves to relax.

I find anxious people are generally already hypnotized.

Just ask them to close their eyes and pace their eye flicker and lead them in. Use hypnotic phenomena early on.

It is a bit like using pain to induce hypnosis. Do not fight pain or anxiety when hypnotizing. No need to tell them feel comfortable or relaxed. Use their anxiety as their focus of your induction.

Thank you for your input Sheila.
interesting Anthony - thank you.
Hi Kenda,
I agree with Anthony, one way to produce hypnosis is to overload their mind with message units, pratically to create a state of anxiety that the mind instead of dealing with it it escapes into hypnosis. I would try some instant or rapid induction so she won't have the time to realise she is anxious.
my 2 cents

Thanks Michael. That was what I was thinking for next session. I see her again this Saturday. Sounds easier to work with what she has, than try to change it at this point. That is where her restance lies I gather.
How about the confusion technique...that would be good also.
I used Seevn Plus or Minus two, right after the Elman failed... But she just really did not want to relax.

Kenda.
Kenda,

When ever you have a client with a particular issue that is manifesting itself during your session, use it to propagate your induction. Have them focus on whatever it is and then notice the changes that you suggest as a method of induction.

example: "As you focus on the feelings that you are feeling now, you will notice in a moment that there is calming glow that is starting to form in your chest. You notice that the glow feels very soothing, very relaxing, and feels very good, and as you shift your focus to the pleasant calm glow, you notice that it expands and feels even better. You can actually feel the stress and tension melting like butter and flowing out of your body. That does feel so good, doesn't it."

Then you can identify and address the cause, and remove it.

Or...: Just get rid of the anxiety with the blow out method, or just do a core dump first to desensitize them before hand.

Hmm...I had better include...

Blow out method: Simply put: Have them amplify the anxiety until it just pops like a balloon. Then it is gone.

Core dump: Using a "D" battery, have the client hold the battery in their dominant hand.. arm outstretched...elbow and shoulder locked. Tell them the battery is a storage device by design, and they will find that when they squeeze the battery, they can notice all of the stress and tension flowing down their arm and into the battery. The harder they squeeze the faster the flow into the battery. When they are sure that all of the stress and tension has flowed into the battery, and they are ready to let it all go.. then just open their hand and let it go. Be sure to let them know that this is their one chance to get rid of it ALL, so make sure that they do just that. Urge them on while they do this by saying things like, "That's it.. squeeze it tighter.. this is your one chance...make sure you get it all.." etc.

I hope that helps

I TEACH the skill of relaxation to people. I use jackobsons PMR, tensing and relaxing the muscles. Bring them into a state of physical relaxation while giving them permission to remain alert mentally focusing on each word, letting them know we will the relaxt the mind. then I say, "As you have relaxed the body, you can now begin to relax the mind" and then its off into my puffy white cloud.... Then a deeper combining physical and mental relaxation....

Or if they are anxious about hypnosis itself, I will sometimes use expectancy instructions with a speedtrance induction.... That downt give them time to become involved in the anxiety of the state.
Hello Kenda,
It sounds like your client is analyzing your words. We like to use the super rapid inductions like a finger snap. The client is in somnambulism with in about 3 seconds. They don't have time to think.

This works for clients that have never been formally hypnotized before.
