It seems to me that there is a great untapped resource here, but I have so far been unable to find any concrete examples; I know of a dog still pining for its companion, who died 6 months ago! The owner tells me that nothing she has tried so far seems to work. Any ideas?

Interesting choice, Kevin... however I am not altogether comfortable in equating Hypnotherapy with Pavlov's experiments in manipulation... In the case I mentioned two dogs had spent all 11 years of their lives together; when one of them died, the other one seemed incapable of moving forward, refusing to eat, soiling himself etc, despite the owner's patient efforts. She has tried just about everything (vet, homeopathy, a new puppy, even a holiday) without success so far. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience in hypnotising animals, and if so, do they think it might work in this case?

The short answer is "yes"- but it's not the same KIND of hypnosis, it's called "cataplexy" (or tonic rigidity),
and would be of no use whatsoever in "therapy".
The most comprehensive study on this subject can be found in a book by Volgyesi titled
"Hypnosis of Man and Animals", 1963 (this is the English translation of "Menschen und
Tierhypnose").
I don't know if it's hypnosis, but I've learned from my father, who learned it from his (and it may go back to as far as our druid ancestors ;-)...) to actually make chickens "freeze".
Take a chicken and lay it on one hand. Calm it by stroking it over the back. When it's calm, put it on the ground and hold it with one hand. With the other hand you draw a straight line in front of the chicken's head. Do this in one fast move. If you did it right the chicken will "freeze". It won't move and look like it's asleep, mostly with open eyes.
Usually after a few minutes it will slowly wake up and shake it off... I don't really see any specific use of this, other than having a competition to freeze as many chickens as possible.... Maybe someone else can think of how this could be used.
That's an example of the type of "tonic rigidity" that can be found in Volgyesi's book.
Useful for "therapy"? Hardly...

Marianne:
It does sound that the Alpa dog has passed on. The rest seems to be Anthropomorphism.
Are you asking if there is Hypnotic Bereavement Therapy for dogs?

Doreen...where are you?!! Marianne, Doreen Cohanim has special insights in working with pets; I'm sure when she reads this she will have valuable suggestions for you!
Thank you for your reply, John! It may seem strange, but yes, I would be grateful for any advice on Hypnotic Bereavement Therapy for dogs...

Hi Kelley,

I just read this, and the answer is yes you can, I have and I believe you can too, now with some dogs, you can do just about direct hypnosis, same way you do it with human, but with some dog it's harder, especially with puddles, they are exactly like a three year old, they relax and as soon as they hear something else, they become distracted.

And with some other dogs, It is much more difficult, especially if they don't know you well enough, and therefor they will attack you, so for this type of pets, I have designed personal MP3 and I like it when the owners voice is edited to what I have done, to have spacial affect.

Feel free to post the dogs picture or type dog it is, or email me privately and I will help you.

Doreen Cohanim C.Ht,
Thank you for your reply, Doreen! The dog is a Tibetan Spaniel, unfortunately I don't have a picture: she lives with a friend in Europe, while I'm in New Zealand! I have also heard that she is not too well herself now - not surprising, as Tibetan Spaniels normally don't live beyond age 9... perhaps the death of her companion (also a Tibetan Spaniel) at age 11 was the last straw.
Her story spurred me to ask the question about hypnosis for animals, and I am grateful for your reply, as I strongly feel that it must be possible; speaking softly to animals can bring remarkable results, so why should it not be possible take this a step further?

Doreen Cohanim C.Ht,
Hi,
I have done quite a bit of really good work with overcoming stuff in animal-physical and emotional. Although I don't "hypnotize" them, I do a sort of age regression with them. As a telepathic animal communicator, I get "in" them and "be" them, and then I take myself/them back to the first incident that is causing this *whatever*. We work through it until all the emotion is neutralized. Then I set up the owners to do energy healing on this pet. It's been working very well. Healing can happen once the root cause is resolved. (Just like people!) Check my website for a story on Ivan the hinny. This tells a heartfelt story of Ivan, why he was the way he was, his past traumas and how he ended up dealing with them, and how he is doing today. I do love doing animal healing work.

Thank you so much for that, Cynthia! A great story, which I feel shows that in the end it doesn't matter what therapy is used, as long as it works - ie, that the holistic approach works best! Your contribution is greatly appreciated and am I sure will inspire others too.
