Wow, nice one Edward! May I ask, what or who are the VFW?
Do any of the fraternities ban female speakers?

You can add American Legion

I was was just adding names to your list. I don't have details on any of the groups, I just know that they are national and fraternal. I would be surprised if any banned female speakers, but perhaps Gideons may ban hypnotists ;))
I didn't mean it to sound like I was directing the question at you specifically. Sorry if it came out like that!
Great list - thank you!

That's a really helpful link - thanks. And don't worry, I didn't get the invite either!

There's a list of gentlemen's clubs on Wikipedia. (The kind attended by the upper crust, not strip joints.) Conrad.
ps - Hey, where are the HypnoThoughts ceremonies where people dress up in silly costumes? Why am I not invited?
Most of these are considered to be community service organizations. They are generally composed of local business people, running events such as dances, raffle tickets, auctions, community events and fundraisers for other charities, for the purpose of raising money to improve community life and to strengthen said club supported charities.

I was a member of one such club for almost ten years. I had gone there to give a speech on hypnosis, I was given seven minutes to talk. Some of the members during my first and second speech, drank quite a bit and it got quite noisy, and some of the people were rude, as the crowd was somewhat out of control to say the least.

Please also realize that if they like you and your personality, if they like what you have to say, many of them will attempt to recruit you as a member. Membership in one organization can quite often preclude membership in another organization. in one such case I had spoken to a complimentary organization began to try to recruit me as a member only to realize I did not qualify by being a member of another club.

If you join, you will be called upon to do various tasks and fundraising events, while attending weekly meetings, and quite often the tendency of the older, long-term members, is to dump a bulwark load of running various programs on new people, in other words, you!

For many years, I ran a local junior high school career day, as well as coordinating running of the high school scholarship program encompassing ten various student recipients.

Most of my work was done single-handedly; just get it done and shut up.
As I am now out of the club, they now have committees of numerous people running both of these events.

Many of their events run quite a lot of money which is paid for and supported by members of the club themselves. So for a hypnotist who is struggling in their business to enter one of these groups as a member, it would be wise to remember that this can run you into a great deal in out of pocket expense. For example, it was not uncommon for the club I was in to give members as many as ten or more raffle tickets then expect you and other members to personally sell these at $100.00 to various people. Some of the members who were more prosperous, would buy the tickets for themselves.

These clubs generally require a great deal of effort, and energy, which if you're looking to get your business up and running, is taking away from that task. It is also been my experience, unless you're willing to donate your professional time somewhere along the line for group hypnosis program, or for an stage hypnosis entertainment show, you will not get paid for the work that you're doing. I hosted quite a few free hypnosis stageshows. And no, not everything you do leads to something else.

One of the members I became friendly with had me hosting hypnosis entertainment for anticancer fundraising event and his daughter's high school, and later college. I did get paid for those, but at extremely reduced rates. In these cases I was happy to help. My shows became a cornerstone to the events, the events themselves raised over $100,000.00. When my connection to these events moved on, so did my work there.

Other than that, there was an occasional one on one private session, and otherwise not much else going on, except camaraderie, and my running to cover a lot of the shortfalls to make sure the events I was in charge of running to ran smoothly and effectively.

The reason I share all of this, is because in many of the hypnosis classes I have taken, the Class instructors discussed this as a possible marketing venue for new hypnotists. Speak to these organizations, instructors will often tell their students, when discussing business marketing locally. From my personal experience, the amount of energy you put in to this has a dramatic lack of return on your energy investment, which can be deleterious to you and your business.

So in conclusion, manage your boundaries, and think long-term what is best for you and your business. how much energy and time you have to donate to an organization and what impact will this have on your business and yourself personally? If you have the money, the extra time, the energy, and are interested improving your local community, these can be great groups to join. But on the other hand, if like most of us you looking to make your business run strongly, and prosperously, it is perhaps better to be a friend of the organization than it is to be a member.
Great points John. I'm not interested in membership, but if Hypnothoughts has a "funny hat club" I'm in!

:o)
I'm down with a funny hat also! Why don't we start a group?
Oh go on then! The Trancient Society of Elmiksonians

I have huge collection hats, whch I use for, drama worshops, circusy hats, shaman's hats, wizards hats, everyday hats... I am sure one of them will be very suitable for this fraternity/sorority.

What is the secret pasword, I wonder?

"wiggle your fingers, wiggle your thumbs... that's the way the magic comes!"

Love and hugs,

Fable

P.S. I've joiend the 'Society'
One of my favorite reference books is the Encyclopedia of Associations, which is published by the same people who publish Who's Who. I guess you could think of it as a Who's Who of organizations, because it's got everything you can think of listed -- including, for example, the Retired Russian Cavalry Officer's Association!

More to the point for us, you can find every hypnosis organization whose Executive Director cared to write in and give them their statistics (some of which are, of course, obviously inflated). You can also find local organizations, or national organizations with local branches, who might like a lunchtime speaker on hypnosis. Many of these groups have already been named here, but there might be a few unique ones in your area -- and it's a great way to get yourself known in a hurry!

That sounds interesting. I wonder of there is an on-line version?
