I am not a medical doctor and I don't treat medical conditions-

I am a medical hypnotist and I have assisted clients with Meniere's disease by teaching and motivating them to practice intentional relaxation on a daily basis with the understanding that negative and positive stress affect inner ear funcion in very different ways. I also help them create a resource state in which they feel Safe and Grounded - and give the a post hypnotic suggestion that mentally repeating "Safe and Grounded - Safe and Grounded - Safe and Grounded" -- they will instantly and automatically feel safe and grounded...

WaIt is not within my "Scope of practice" to diagnose or treat medical conditions. But I can help reduce the stress of a condition.way

Has your client shared what part of the meniere's disease/syndrome is most troublesome? Vertigo, nausea with vomiting. Hearing loss. Tinnitus. How often do the episodes last and their frequency. When did the episodes first start and which effects were first?

The suggestion to be "safe and grounded" may help address the overwhelming feeling of being out of control that a vertigo episode creates. It is a pretty scary event for a person. It goes beyond simple dizziness. }t can be a ground hugging nauseating situation. Not knowing how long it's going to last adds to the crisis. If they have a history of such events giving them a physical "anchor" of reassurance that this storm can pass; tapping into the suggestions of "safe and grounded" that are already in place may be helpful.

Tinnitus is aggravated by the act of paying attention to it. Pre talk about how we acclimate to background noise is helpful. Give examples. People who live near an airport, the ocean, a highway or train hardly notice the background noise that we might find very annoying. In trance begin suggestions that over time maybe today maybe tomorrow he/she pays less and attention to. The sound of______ it simply recedes, it is not important now. I like William Michell's phrase: "remember to forget and forget to remember". I've adapted for the trance work.

Don't know if hypnosis can help withThe actual progressive sensorineural hearing loss.Have never addressed it. However they can begin to develop their powers of observation, enabling them to be better lip readers. Being "grounded and safe" reducing the anxiousness that would interfer with developing that skill .

Best regards, kathy sheetz RN,BSN,

I do not diagnose or treat medical conditions either.  I will have a client in my office this week who has been diagnosed with Meniere's Disease.  I plan to follow the above suggestions for a resource anchor, "safe and grounded", acclimation, daily relaxation ...as well as showing drawings of the ear and discussing ideopathic disease, the mind's control over the body, and physiological reasons for symptoms (ie. too much fluid, not enough drainage, etc).
