Permalink Reply by Jan Krüger on August 13, 2010 at 9:04am Letters after your name don't give you first dibs on the truth. I have letters after my name (though I usually make them invisible because I don't care about them very much)... doesn't make me more right than someone who doesn't.by letters I mean a recognised professional qualification such as a university degree in psychology for example. although somebody will put it higher it still is a MINORITY of the population.

a quote from Medical and dental hypnosis by John Hartland B.Sc.,M.B.,M.R.C.S.,L.R.C.P., consulting psychiatrist, formerly visiting psychiatrist hallam hospital west bromwich, president of the british society of medical and dental hypnosis, life president of the midlands branch of the british society for medical and dental hypnosis, honorary fellow of the american society of clinical hypnosis, fellow of the international society for clinical and experimental hypnosis, editor of the british journal of clinical hypnosis. chapter 10- all kinds of sense delusions can be produced in deep hypnotic states many of which are so remarkable that anyone seeing them for the first time may well be excused for doubting the reality of the phenomena. in everyday life we all depend so completely upon our sense organs that it seems incredible that a few words or phrases can succeed in placing the hypnotic subject in entirely different surroundings.but before many phenomena such as these can be elicited, a very deep or even somnambulistic trance is usually essential.
unfortunately, under ordinary circumstances only some 15 to 20 per cent of the population are capable of achieving somnambulistic trances, and in medical work the average will probably prove to be no more than one person in ten.
Permalink Reply by Kevin Atwell on August 13, 2010 at 2:24pm that last remark is nonsense. a certain percentage of the population can be hypnotized to a state called somnambulism, whatever that percentage may be. some experts may give a different figure, whatever letters they may or may not have after their name. perhaps only natural somnambulists can reach that level.
the word somnambulism has 2 meanings, the original from the latin-somn, meaning sleep, and ambulare, walk. this applies to a person who for example will get out of bed in the night, go down and raid the fridge and have no memory of it the next morning. the word is used in hypnotism because of the resemblance to a deeply hypnotized person.
an early name for hypnotism WAS artificial somnambulism.
Antoine Pruyssers said:Actually it was a rhetorical question Peter.
The 10% is the percentage of somnambulists, not people, who can achieve a somnambulist state.

I think its awesome that you're so curious about hypnosis. I wish I had been exposed to it earlier in life. Whether or not you use a rapid or progressive induction depends on what your goal is. If you're doing street hypnosis or stage hypnosis, rapid inductions are the quickest and easiest way to get people under. If you're doing THERAPY, on the other hand, I personally think progressive relaxation helps the subject go deeper so that they can get the full benefit of therapy.
If you can get out to HMI (in Tarzana), I would highly recommend taking their Hypnosis Intro course (its free and very very useful!)
Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions you have along the way!
