Hey all,
My name is Matt. I'm 16 years old. I was recently, a few days ago, exposed to hypnotism. I was completely fascinated. I'm completely intrigued. I've read two books so far and i've decided that i was going to spend all of the free time i have during summer (i have a lot) learning hypnosis.

I've read in other discussions that instant inductions don't really get you the foundation for being a true hypnotist. i've also read that you dont get the same outcome from rapid inductions and progressive muscle relaxation. i'm in a daze. Can someone help out?

Thank you so much.

although not everyone can be hypnotized, at least to a deep level.
I think many here disagree with that.
Pardon me? Where do you get this 10%???
And I can put some abbreviations behind my name, if you want me to.
How does HT sound, or senior-counselor?

anyone qualified in hypnosis, i.e. letters after their name, will say around 10% can achieve somnambulism.
Hi Matt!

Congradulations! You've just stepped into a very fascinating world. It is a great thing to be able to achieve your personal goals through hypnosis. It's an even better thing to be able to help others achieve theirs. In regards to inductions, learn to do both. You will learn that different people respond to different things. The more tools in your tool box the better. Pick one, study it, understand it (how and why it works), get comfortable with it, then pick another. Clinical hypnosis can be a very rewarding career, both personally and financially. At some point you will want to study NLP and Ericksonian/ Indirect/ Conversational Hypnosis. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!
Well, I would say that about 80% of the people can reach somnambulism, about 20% very fast and the others with practice-some with just a/more longer induction/s, others with shorter one/s..and the other 20% won't ever come to you to be hypnotized because they are not interested or believe it to be a hoax.
Mathieu, congrats on beginning to discover the magic world of hypnosis, one of your resorces could be Brian David Phillips Online Free course.Very good and Comprehensive course, check it out.

by letters I mean a recognised professional qualification such as a university degree in psychology for example. although somebody will put it higher it still is a MINORITY of the population.
Letters after your name don't give you first dibs on the truth. I have letters after my name (though I usually make them invisible because I don't care about them very much)... doesn't make me more right than someone who doesn't.

I am quite glad, though, that my letters have nothing to do with a university degree in psychology, or any of the magical hypnosis certifications (fun fact: there is no officially recognized hypnosis certification at all in this country since there aren't any restrictions on it in the first place). I certainly don't need one of those, let alone most of the stuff they teach you there. I've had enough lectures about statistics in my own field of study.
Actually it was a rhetorical question Peter.
The 10% is the percentage of somnambulists, not people, who can achieve a somnambulist state.
Second of all, I find the use of title's a display of insecurity, or the need to compensate.
It might be a good idea to get your facts straight before giving advice to other beginners.
As for your use of percentages:"87% of all statistics are made up"
If your percentages were correct, I couldn't make a dime with my practice, while I'm getting paid pretty well because it just isn't correct what you are claiming.
So again, I ask you, what sources did you get that misleading information from?

My warm regards.
Antoine

a quote from Medical and dental hypnosis by John Hartland B.Sc.,M.B.,M.R.C.S.,L.R.C.P., consulting psychiatrist, formerly visiting psychiatrist hallam hospital west bromwich, president of the british society of medical and dental hypnosis, life president of the midlands branch of the british society for medical and dental hypnosis, honorary fellow of the american society of clinical hypnosis, fellow of the international society for clinical and experimental hypnosis, editor of the british journal of clinical hypnosis. chapter 10- all kinds of sense delusions can be produced in deep hypnotic states many of which are so remarkable that anyone seeing them for the first time may well be excused for doubting the reality of the phenomena. in everyday life we all depend so completely upon our sense organs that it seems incredible that a few words or phrases can succeed in placing the hypnotic subject in entirely different surroundings.but before many phenomena such as these can be elicited, a very deep or even somnambulistic trance is usually essential.
unfortunately, under ordinary circumstances only some 15 to 20 per cent of the population are capable of achieving somnambulistic trances, and in medical work the average will probably prove to be no more than one person in ten.

Welcome to HypnoThoughts!

Suggested reading: Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman (Awesome book)

Gather all of the information you can, work with as many people as possible and have fun with it.
Ask every question, test every hypothesis and study every person’s methods and create a method that works best for you.

Continue to practice even if you have no one. If you are mowing or driving, why not take advantage of the time to say the words out loud, no one will hear you. You can build your comfort level up for when you are using a real person.

There is nothing more exciting than using your induction and watching that person just drop and follow your suggestions so beautifully.

Confidence is the key, continue to build yours through practice.

Respectfully,
Kevin
I know what the deal with somnambulism is Peter, I mean somnambulism, that follows the hypnoidal, and cataleptic trance-depths.
The amount of people able to reach that depth is far greater, then 10, or even 25%.
And no smart "expert" would even start to hint towards a percentile, because that would only get them to contradict themselves in a short timespan.

peter davies said:
that last remark is nonsense. a certain percentage of the population can be hypnotized to a state called somnambulism, whatever that percentage may be. some experts may give a different figure, whatever letters they may or may not have after their name. perhaps only natural somnambulists can reach that level.
the word somnambulism has 2 meanings, the original from the latin-somn, meaning sleep, and ambulare, walk. this applies to a person who for example will get out of bed in the night, go down and raid the fridge and have no memory of it the next morning. the word is used in hypnotism because of the resemblance to a deeply hypnotized person.
an early name for hypnotism WAS artificial somnambulism.

I've seen quite a few stage hypnosis shows, and rapid inductions have never been used.

Hey Matt,

I think its awesome that you're so curious about hypnosis. I wish I had been exposed to it earlier in life. Whether or not you use a rapid or progressive induction depends on what your goal is. If you're doing street hypnosis or stage hypnosis, rapid inductions are the quickest and easiest way to get people under. If you're doing THERAPY, on the other hand, I personally think progressive relaxation helps the subject go deeper so that they can get the full benefit of therapy.
If you can get out to HMI (in Tarzana), I would highly recommend taking their Hypnosis Intro course (its free and very very useful!)
Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions you have along the way!

:)
