NLP versus Hypnosis

There seems to be some that laught or scoff at the use of NLP. However I view NLP as a very productive addition to my Hypnosis business. Imagine if you will 2 big circles that overlap each other and thats where I practice. to say that NLP is not effective or is a hoax is absurd.Thats like saying can you be in Trance with your eyes open or do they have to be closed. Can it be proven scientifically that it works or doesnt work. The same question has plagued Hypnosis for hundreds of years and now we want to expand that to NLP. Any questions or comments this is Now open.

Back to the original topic. In Bandlers new book he calls NLP the "foundation of hypnosis". Talk about a reframe.... Hypnosis is the foundation of NLP. It is my belief NLP has a sales structure that promotes the belief that it is the foundation of hypnosis, but in reality it is all just another approach to using the mind to create, inspire, problem-solve and learn. That is hypnosis. And so if I may correct Bandler, "Hypnosis it the foundation of NLP" and in my opinion -- NLP is hypnosis is NLP.

Agreed Richard very well put I have had this thought for along time, even as much as a year and a 1/2 before I got my formal training.

I placed a video on here of how my model of the mind works in my Therapy sessions. That is not to say that any particular method is wrong. Any method that produces results is absolutely right. This is just my Method like it or not thats it.

grumpy you seem really hung up on what people are tagged with in thier certification what would you like us to be called. How about a certificate of Im ALMOST THERE would that satisfy you. or you can call it anything you like. How many years of training in your Expert opinion would it take to be say good, or whatever you want for a title. For cryin out loud its just a title if you dont want it dont get it. You can call me anything you want. Im just a practioner in Hypnosis and a practioner in NLP and I teach people who don't have a clue. Results are my goals thats it, nothing more nothing less.

Hey Daniel,

I don’t see it as a 'versus', but more of a NLP plus Hypnosis relationship, just as you brilliantly expressed with the overlapping circles metaphor. The most useful mindset is the one with the most choices, is it not?
I've been reading the answers to this topic and what's in my mind right now is if anyone here can honestly say that they did not learn anything from NLP neither use any tool from it, not even indirectly. Not to say it’s an impossible feat, even though I find it quite difficult, but more than that I wouldn’t find it wise.

So, is there anyone here who never benefited from NLP training/techniques? If so, I'd advise you if I may to just grab a book on the subject ('covertly', if you will) and with an open mind, check to see if you find something uselful for you; I guarantee you that you can and you will.

IMO NLP is amazingly useful. It’s NOT that scientifically proven, true, but hey, it works and that’s all that matters at least in my point of view: achieving the desired results.

I found it very strange seeing that not everyone here gladly approves the use of NLP, as I believe that even though it’s not seen as too scientific, it has a great reputation for boosting results. Personally, I have a great deal of gratitude for the creators and developers of this fascinating field for creating techniques that accelerate many of the hypnotic procedures and turning the rather mysterious process of hypnosis into something which the conscious mind can grasp - the denominalization of hypnosis. But you know, I guess that even in a field such as hypnosis we can afford to have those who don’t enjoy of a very open mind in some subjects, and that’s ok with me.

And as Nongard said, "in my opinion -- NLP is hypnosis is NLP", so what's with the discrimination? I tell you -- NLP knowledge can quickly help you to get rid of this neurolinguisticphobia and have you enjoying more success at no time.

At a recent local NLP meetup, I mentioned during the initial introductions that I have no training whatsoever in NLP. The visiting lecturer, who studied with Bandler and Grinder, replied that formal training in NLP is useless. :-) Ultimately, I found it useful to pick up a book on NLP at my used bookstore so that I could understand the terminology. Otherwise, it's mostly ideas and techniques I've encountered elsewhere.

Flat out, I think there are a lot of great hypnosis techniques being taught in NLP. Some work just as well without a formal induction as they do in deep trance. (I heard a rumor once that all NLP techniques were originally supposed to be used in deep trance, but that someone missed that part of the training and started using them without any induction. Who knows?) There's also a lot of nonsense being taught, and there are a lot of people who apply NLP techniques as though they were magic. There's usually at least one "master" attending who is an incredibly poor communicator . . .

So I'm happy to kick in ten dollars a month for room rental and to buy the occasional used book on NLP. But I'm not about to waste a bunch of money on overpriced training.

I'm in a part of the world that makes it very hard to find good NLP trainers and the few places that do have it cost an arm and a leg and claim to give this training once you have completed or have the training and or certificates to prove that you have followed all the levels and it is something I would love to add to my hypnosis and to master nlp make it as covert as possible and so forth but as I said here in Quebec it is not something you can find anywhere and when you do you need to be sure they are who they say they are as you know there are many who believe they know and master nlp techniques but you can see them from a mile away but nlp is a true phenomena and would and could use more study the little I do master works on most every one but I would like to learn more.

Hypnosis is the "hidden" dynamic underlying NLP; wherever there's an authority figure and a "patient," hypnosis will occur. In fact, hypnosis underpins ALL therapies, from faith healing to mainstream Freudian psychology (should such a thing exist anymore).

ANY therapy can work, providing the practitioner utilizes the hypnotic dynamic effectively. In that sense, the key to therapeutic efficacy is consistent application of a given methodology. As long as you don't vary your techniques and apply the hypnotic dynamic with force and [some measure of] skill, it makes no difference whatsoever what you do or what you call it.
