Thousands log on to online hypnotist
6:22pm Tuesday 5th January 2010

AN OXFORDSHIRE hypnotist said he was overwhelmed by the success of an online hypnosis experiment which saw more than 31,000 people log on to start the new year in a trance.

Chris Hughes, 34, cancelled a live online hypnosis session on Monday, claiming lawyers feared a participant could get stuck in a trance.

However, within 17 hours 31,740 people in more than 85 countries had downloaded his hypnosis session on MP3, in which Mr Hughes tests people’s susceptibility to hypnosis by attempting to ‘lock’ their hands together and making it impossible for them to open their eyes.

Using just the power of his voice Mr Hughes also hypnotised people to feel better about themselves and motivate them to achieve their goals in 2010.

Mr Hughes, who works as a hypnotherapist in Banbury, said: “I have had over 1,000 emails from people saying it was amazing and they wouldn’t have tried hypnotism at all if it wasn’t for this.

“I’m upset we couldn’t do it live but the world we live in is over-litigious.”

I listened in,
to the online talk,
(even though I knew in advance
that he would not actually be doing the live hypnotic session).

It was a fairly straight foreward demystifying of hypnosis.
along with some guiding words about how to find a hypnotherapist.

I then downloaded the MP3, and listened to it,
and responded well enough.
Elman style eye catalepsy.
Deepener of going down twenty steps...
(although half way down,
I think he must have forgot,
as it changed to ten steps.),
worked well enough though
despite that.

general suggestions for well being,
and making changes that you might want to make.

All in all it was ok,

Didn't notice any suggestions for hands stuck or stuck to seat,
so he must have decided to drop that.

The facebook discussion forum, was vefry busy afterwards,
with mixed reaction, but many people feeeling they had responded well.

All in all, I think he handled the change in plan,
and still made something usewell and made something usefull of it.
although of course different newspapers, are writing the story up with different slants.

Love and hugs,

Fable
A well-planned stunt.

“I’m upset we couldn’t do it live but the world we live in is over-litigious.”

LOL. Which, of course, he had no idea of beforehand!
BRILLIANT PUBLICITY STUNT OR "CON JOB"
?Hypnotist's web trance 'a con' A hypnotist's promise to put thousands of people in a trance over the internet proved a flop last night.
Chris Hughes said he would go for a world record by hypnotising all 6,300 who signed up to his Social-Trance site.
But, instead of a promised half-hour webcast, visitors to the site found a pre-recorded MP3 file instead offering hypnotherapy tips. Hughes, 34, explained legal advice had prevented him from going ahead with the original plan.
Twitter was bombarded with angry messages.
One person tweeted: ‘I feel cheated, i lost 30 minutes of my life listening.’ Another wrote: ‘Chris you are either brilliant at marketing or you have goofed I feel cheated.’
Hello folks,
Chris Hughes offered a summary of the "World Record' event in the attached link...nice graph showing the numbers of participants, countries, etc. etc. I feel quite ok with how he handled it....no tricks, convincers, etc. and given the stress that must have been involved, the whole thing turned out ok. I think the ones who complained at feeling cheated might also have been the ones to claim they 'got stuck' had he attempted a mass induction :)

I've encouraged Chris to join Hypnothoughts and he said he will.

Cheers Grace,

I agre that Chris did the best he could under the circumstances.

and I also agree with Gil, that the press have been having a field day misrepresenting what happened.

Unfortunately Gil, you do not always say that you are simply pasting a quote from the press, so it sometimes seems that you are expressing your opinion...

Pehaps in future, if you are posting a quote from some newspaper, you could quote the source, so that we don't confuse it with your esteemed opinion, which obviously would have been more understanding.

LOve and hugs,

Fable
Grace-

could you please post that info directly rather than requiring people to download from rapid share?

thanks,

Scott
Hello everyone
The file that grace had provided as a link contains a lot of stats and graphs relating to visitors. I have posted the main text below for ease of access.
I would like to point out I never planned to stick people to chairs and that Gil Boyne's post was from the London Metro that failed to even notice there a live portion. Just another example of poor journalism :)

Do hope to make some friends :)

The Social Trance Live Session for World Hypnotism Day
OK, here is the real story about the Socialtrance Hypnosis event for World Hypnotism Day 2010.
It was one of most intense experiences I have had in many years. From the outset, the expectation was low. I anticipated no more than 1000 people would take part. How wrong was I.
The level of interest in Socialtrance was huge and I have to call in a friend to with the last minute preparations for the event at around 4pm. He spent most of the time answering phone calls from newspapers and radio stations from all over the world who were requesting interviews with me prior to the event commencing. This was a hint of what was still to come.

In the last couple of hours leading up to the event, there was a MASSIVE surge in registrations that eventually took the web server offline. As such, last minute changes were required to the hosting (that’s why a new website was set up to host it called www.socialtrancelive.co.uk with just 30 minutes to spare).

Originally, there was a requirement for people to register for the event. I had to remove this requirement at the last minute. By doing this, it allowed me to remove all server-side scripting requirements from the webpages. This gave the webserver a fighting chance of being able to cope with the demand.

The session started late, but this was to give as many people as possible to the opportunity to get onto the site and to connect. Then at 8:45PM GMT 16,252 people from over 85 countries connected to the live webcast.

Sadly we live in a world where a 'litigation culture' exists in many countries. I had been advised by professional hypnotherapists even in the hours running up to the event of the acute risk associated with performing a live hypnosis session where the environment of the participants cannot be controlled. To do so would have been an open door for 'law-suit hungry' individuals to warm up their lawyers and blame myself for any and every personal mishap that befell them after the event.

I am a fulltime practicing hypnotherapist and have a young family to support and provide for. I was not prepared to run the risk of having to fight legal battles from all over the world.

I spent time just before the event recording the content of what would have been the live hypnosis session. We were then able to offer it as a download. By offering it as a download, where people are totally in control of when and where the choose to listen to it, shifts the legal footing considerably, and became the only viable way for the Socialtrance event to take place.

Many people, and hypnotherapists felt fobbed off by the change in format and strangely aggrieved by the amount of publicity that this has generated for myself and for hypnosis in general on World Hypnotism Day. My goal was to bring hypnosis to an audience that might never have even considered using hypnosis before. Personally, I believe I achieved this - and I didn't even try to sell a thing! Hence the £5000 webcast bill I now have to find the money to pay..

At time of writing the MP3 download has so far been downloaded over 50,000 times and it has generated massive discussion on Facebook and on Twitter that has stimulated a huge discussion on the topic of hypnosis. There is now hypnotherapists who are translating the Socialtrance mp3 into Spanish, Italian to name a few, due to people so wanting to take part.
It was a great experience and if I have convinced just a few people to make a change to there life for the better then it was all worth it.
Thanks For joining us Chris,

I am just relistening to last five minutes of your webcast, as I type.
"All is not lost..

I have a Plan...

I have prepared for this evenuality!"

Great Recovery!

LOve and hugs

Fable
Thanks Fable

Well done for spotting the vanishing 10 steps. It was so rushed I did not even listen to it back. Its funny how many have said it was a deliberate confusion technique :)

Chris
I can entirely understand, how you could lose ten steps,
in the course of what must have been a very
busy and stressful day.

It did not detract from my experience greatly.
I simply noticed, it, realised what had
happened, and moved past it.
as my intent, was to take
something possitive
from the whole
experience.

not to focus on
reasons to
dismiss it.

Well done!

Love and hugs,

Fable
Chris,
Kudos, thanks for the attempt and all the controversy you created on this site
Keep it real,
Scott Morgan

Hi Chris,

I am very sorry to learn that as neither Scott Brown nor any save one of his friends knows you, you must not exist. I mean you are, after all, presently in the town where he grew up, how could he have missed you?

If you did exist, I would acknowledge your ambitious endeavour and excellent save under demanding circumstances. Alas, I cannot!
