Thousands log on to online hypnotist
6:22pm Tuesday 5th January 2010

AN OXFORDSHIRE hypnotist said he was overwhelmed by the success of an online hypnosis experiment which saw more than 31,000 people log on to start the new year in a trance.

Chris Hughes, 34, cancelled a live online hypnosis session on Monday, claiming lawyers feared a participant could get stuck in a trance.

However, within 17 hours 31,740 people in more than 85 countries had downloaded his hypnosis session on MP3, in which Mr Hughes tests people’s susceptibility to hypnosis by attempting to ‘lock’ their hands together and making it impossible for them to open their eyes.

Using just the power of his voice Mr Hughes also hypnotised people to feel better about themselves and motivate them to achieve their goals in 2010.

Mr Hughes, who works as a hypnotherapist in Banbury, said: “I have had over 1,000 emails from people saying it was amazing and they wouldn’t have tried hypnotism at all if it wasn’t for this.

“I’m upset we couldn’t do it live but the world we live in is over-litigious.”

over-litigious??
Hi Chris,

Welcome to Hypnothoughts, and congratulations on becoming the most famous hypnotherapist in the world, at least for a few days. :)

I'm the token PR person here on the site (I'm a client, not a hypnotherapist) so I'm really curious--did you have a PR professional advising you, or was this a do-it-yourself effort?

In many ways, this whole episode makes an excellent public relations case history. I hope other folks on HypnoThoughts have learned just how powerful an interesting news angle and social media can be in promoting their services and hypnosis as a healing modality.

Thanks,
Kathleen

Hi Jackie and everybody else.

I will let you know when my existence has been verified.. Been trying to find something on Google about Scott Brown but all I can find is a conversation in which he is trying to choose a stage name..

Best of luck with that scott and thanks for the warm welcome!

Chris
Ian you are correct. I can not get on the site at the moment I think the site said that people would be unable to get out of their chair. I never used the term "sticking people to chairs" is what I meant although I appreciate it is much the same thing :)
Scott, OF COURSE the online world record "attempt" was a marketing ploy! Any of the various "world record" attempts involving hypnosis have been marketing plays and a few have worked. Obviously, despite his epiphany that the world is indeed over-litigious, this did very well for Chris. Actually I've had a few folks here in Taiwan let me know that they saw the story in a local Chinese language newspaper . . . so, whether or not you and your mates had ever heard of Chris, you and a lot of folks all over the planet have now!

You are absolutely correct that Christ is so obviously using social media in order to create a positive impression of himself and to increase his exposure . . . that's kind of the point of such promotions. :-)

Whether or not this newfound reputation is justified by his experience or competence is for him to live up to.

A bit of healthy jealousy or skepticism is fine, as long as we know the difference between healthy and just sour grapes as we didn't think of it first. :-)

Whether or not Chris is competent or experienced or well known in his own community are less important to the success of his "stunt" than simply finding a method to get his exposure . . . and hopefully, living up to that.

Certainly, I know I've met some really good highly skilled hypnotists who are less than successful as they have the skillsets in hypnosis but they just don't have much success in getting the sort of exposure that would bring them to the next level. I've also met some highly successful hypnotists, some of whom are very well known and make beaucoup bucks doing this stuff, who I honestly wonder if they could actually hypnotize their way out of a paper bag. They are just really good marketers.

Don't get me wrong, I believe you need both . . . and I certainly don't condone the "anything to get publicity" school of thought (some of Royle's stunts leave me less than cold and the "stuck in self-hypnosis bit by a cirquess type performer story currently floating about leaves me with a sour taste like no other). Whether or not I had ever heard of him before the event, I hope that Chris capitalizes on his success with this event and that he backs up the exposure with competence, if not, if he were just another creepy sales cow with no genuine skill or just a greedy opportunist then I secretly or not so secretly hope he quietly crashes and burns and disappears . . . but . . . the event itself, while some might find it hokey or cheezy or worse, was obviously a PR success and if he has the competence and value to bring it forward than more power to Chris.

All the best,
Brian

I believe it was pulled down by the original poster.

None of the moderators or I pulled it down, to the best of my knowledge.

Also there was another thread on this forum about this stunt, what happen to it???

Also sorry Brain I find it very hard to believe that the story appeared in a local Chinese language newspaper.

Scott, my wife showed me the article and it is indeed a Chinese language newspaper based in Taipei and it is about the event. If you choose not to believe me as to whether or not it happened, that's your own look out.

All the best,
Brian

The original thread, moved quickly away from the topic to which organization admitted more cats, to posts about the character of a HT member, moderators removed several posts with personal information, and that was the third strike. Perhaps no other thread deviate from the topic more negatively in so few pages. So I deleted it.
This thread seems to be debating the topic much better.

Of course he had a PR director Kathleen!
Here is a link to Jonathan Royle claiming credit for the PR and Safety aspects of it:

My question here, is it illegal street lawyering on the part of JR who says he functioned as a "legal advisor"

WOW! I had no idea that Facebook and Twitter were around in Biblical days... Nor maybe that Mr Hughes was the second coming! That's one helluva positive impression! ;-P
