What is "parts therapy". I've seen it in many posts and don't know if I know it by another term. Would someone do me the favor please of explaining the details of parts therapy? I'd like to know if I know or know that I do not know and need to know! Many thanks to all, Mike.

Mike,

Roy Hunter as a good article on Parts Therapy on his website. He also has a Parts Therapy Group here on Hypnothoughts that includes case histories.

How are people finding their 'parts' these days?

Does anyone know the value of separating things from the person? (disassociation, perhaps?)

I have found that separating a person's part occasionally creates some kind of dichotomy, if that's the right word which somewhow needs to brought back and doesn't always feel like a holistic approach.

Is it a part, like a piece of pie, cake, or a part of you that's the smoker for example; or a part of the unconscious that's unknown that will provide unexpected answer sometime in the future, like in M Step reframe.

I personally found the unconscious approach works best.

I've had Satir's 'Parts Party' on DVD for a while but can't really relate to it. Is this still something people are still using effectively and getting good results?

Well, guess it's time to 'part' company.

Your Hypnothoughts,

PS:(I'll check out the Parts group on the link above)

Here is what I say to a client to introduce parts therapy.

"We all have “parts” or “subpersonalities.” They develop as a way of coping with a challenging life situation. Have you ever said to yourself or another, “A part of me feels this way but another part wants just the opposite.” That ambivalence comes from parts that are not integrated. It’s normal to have these parts but it does make life more complicated because of the inner struggle that goes on just below the surface. These parts have a great deal of power, don’t they? There’s a part of you that is keeping you smoking even though, consciously, you’re ready to quit and have quit many times without success. You’ll be able to have a conversation with that part today and work out an agreement that will meet both your needs."

It is one of the most powerful tools I have for helping clients. My clients come out of trance and often comment that they feel "different". More grown up... more whole and complete. It isn't something that you can learn from a book. Even though Roy Hunter's book is excellent. It is definitely worth taking a live training.

Michael,

In a nutshell, parts therapy is talking to the mental upper management of the client. For every thing that you do, or don't do, there is a part of your mind that is the supervisor of that behavior.

Every reaction you have, every belief, every behavior, etc, has one of these supervisors. You have an internal code of conduct that you are held accountable to, a standard that you are measured against (which is really you measuring yourself against it) and this is the part of you that handles that, along with that voice in your head to beat you up when you screw up.

In my model, this behavior/decision center is called the judgmental mind. It is always aware, always on alert, even while sleeping.

It is easiest to think of this part of your mind like the upper management of a company. The company of YOU, whose goal is the betterment of you the person.

So with this philosophy, it means that you as the hypnotist trying to incorporate change, act as a consultant to that company.

You can ask to speak directly to the part of the person in charge of a specific behavior, but you must do it through the client themselves. Their conscious mind plays liaison between you.

You cannot TELL upper management what to do (that is the same as dealing with a real company) you can only suggest and recommend while providing supportive data for the change (that had better include a good reason for the change, a better one than the reason they already have for doing it how they do it now.)

Or

You can have the different parts of upper management talk among themselves to come up with a solution.

Either way, you cannot force them to do it. You can only request that they do for the betterment of the person.

If upper management is not behind the proposed change in behavior, it will actively resist it.

It is a very powerful tool, not only in enabling behavior change, but as a diagnostic tool to determine why someone is doing what they are doing in the first place. The client often does not conscious know why they do what they do.

Roy Hunter does have quite an extensive training that is available, and he learned from the founding father of this type of session Charles Tebbits.

My philosophy is a bit different than his, but it is very effective also.

I hope this is understandable in the way that I said it

John

Very Helpful.  Thanks John.  BTW, did I see something posted about a successful smoking cessation program you authored?  If so, can you point me to it?  Regards, Michael B.

Hey Mike-

Hypnosis is a persuasive healing art-- Having said that
Parts therapy and Parts therapy like approaches are highly effective tools because a wide range of people find it reasonable to believe that going through this type of hypnotic process will produce their desired outcomes - Which creates the expectancy and belief necessary to change a habit--

Here is an example of a modified "Parts" like approach that uses story telling to promote health, healing and wellbeing.

Pre- talk:
Hypnotic healing is a symbolic healing art and as soon as I guide you into an enhanced state on mind - I will be telling your a story that will speak to your unconscious mind in way that promotes health, healing and well being in rapid and powerful ways and all you have to do is enjoy the story and leave the healing to your unconscious mind....

I guide clients into an enhanced state and tell them a story:

An elderly Cherokee Medicine Man was teaching his grandchildren about health and healing. He said to them, "A fight is going on inside everyone who has a health challenge. It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves."

"One wolf promotes pain and disease--he feeds on fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, self-pity, guilt, and resentment."

"The other wolf promotes healing and well-being--he feeds on joy, peace, love, hope, serenity and faith."

The grandchildren thought about this story for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one they feed."

Now it's time to ask your clients to take three deep breaths and begin to bring themselves back to waking consciousness with the understanding that before they open their eyes they will think, feel, and act as if they completely understand that people who feel better. . . heal faster.

This is a powerful image to leave with your clients, Empower by the suggestion and enhanced by the delightful story.

Note: This healing story is an adaptation of an anonymous Native American tale. It's too bad we don't know who to give credit to for it.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your insights.

As with most processes I've found that people tend to put their own slant on things which makes it difficult to get a good live demonstration of what the original intention and current understanding of what parts are -  people change techniques slightly to match their personalities, styles etc.

I do use parts work but I will try and check out any live demonstrations and the above book.

Thanks Michael for reminding me of the Wolf Story, I recently heard that tale at a Medicine Wheel training a couple of weeks ago and just used it over an hour ago, thanks to you.

Regards,

Jay

MJB:  Thanks for posting the question.  And for those who responsed ...the suggestions are much appreciated.

Michael:

As a small unsolicited tribute, I've starting putting your "words of wisdom" into a computer folder titled "Michael Ellner".  I want to be able to revisit your postings from time to time.  As often as you post, you should consider writing a book.

Thanks to everyone.  Great information as usual.  Really appreciate the response!  Michael

Hey Alonzo --

I am honored - Thank you!  FYI -  I am open to the possibility that this could lead to co-authoring a book down the road.

Think about it...
