Many of you know my good friend and teaching partner, Paul Durbin.  At Thanksgiving time in the US (late Nov.) Paul had surgery for liver cancer.  He was told at the time that they removed the tumor and all was well.  A week later I talked to him and he had been walking down the block and was feeling well enough for just having had surgery.  I learned late last night that Paul was back in the hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana.

I just got off the phone with Scott Durbin, Paul's son.  Paul is back in the hospital.  Paul was having discomfort trying to sleep on his back. He was having pain in the area of his liver.  They did a CT scan week before last and the surgeon called him last week to tell him it was clear--no cancer.  But, he kept having discomfort that was growing worse and not allowing him to sleep.  So, they did an MRI and it showed a localized area of cancer. They do not know if it was cancer that returned or that they did not get the first time.

The good news is that it is localized and will not require surgery or chemo to treat.  He will take a smart pill to destroy it sometime down the road.  They admitted him to the hospital because the doctors said his body was still in shock from the surgery and his vitals were all over the board.  He is extremely weak.  The current plan is to keep him in the hospital for 2-3 days until they can get his vitals stabilized and he can regain some strength, then let him go home.  There are no plans to treat the cancer until he regains some strength.  A few days after surgery he was up and walking around the block.  They think it is the lack of sleep, trauma from surgery and unstable vitals that are causing his weakness.
According to Scott he is making both short term and long range plans.  That's a good sign.  Paul's mother lived well into her 90's.  I'm counting on him to follow suit.
If I hear more I'll keep you posted.  All prayers are appreciated.

Melissa, may I suggest making this a new thread or post?  It should be on the front page of the site for a few days, I think.

I'm so very sorry to hear about his passing. I didn't know him, but I know his work and use some of his materials, for which I am grateful. He will be missed by many, many people and I'm sending warmth to his family.

May he rest in the peace he deserves,

Fiona

I do not know how to do that, Lee.  I have tried and tried to write a tribute to Paul but I've ended up trashing them all.  I don't seem to be able to find the words that convey Paul's essence.  And, each time I try to write about him I just end up crying again.  Maybe in a couple of weeks it won't be so raw and I will be able to capture what Paul meant to us all. Or, maybe, those of us who knew him personally could contribute bits and pieces to a tribute.  Then I could make a montage out of them for his family.
