Yesterday I had to cancel an upcoming presentation because I've contracted a bad case of influenza.

Although I usually stand by the performer's motto:"The show must go
on!", it came in conflict with my other motto:"Lead by example!".

I've been thinking about it, resolved my feelings about it, and came to the logical decision that it would be best to cancel.

Still I found it a hard decision to make.

Have any of you had these kind of experience, and if yes, what were your thoughts, and actions?

The top 5 priorities (alphabetically) are generally found in these categories Career, Family, Friends, Health and Mate. I favor Health as number one. Without that the other four are greatly diminished. Get well, then help others from a place of strength. Energetically this is considered a vital principle by Chinese Traditional Medicine.
Those who were to attend probably appreciate that you were thoughtful enough about them that you did not want to expose them to the unpleasantness of flu. Feel better soon!
I haven't had that experience, but I am confident that I would make the same choice that you did -- Now if you were shot or hit by a car - I'd say buck up and do your presentation... =^..^=

Feel well and heal fast my friend-

Antoine,

Luckily, I haven't had to cancel an appointment due to illness, but I know that would be difficult. Clearly your priority must be to get over this influenza; you made the choice that was correct. Now you must choose to allow yourself to rest, and that includes putting aside regretful feelings! Treat yourself as you would a client who could not make an appointment with you due to illness: with loving kindness.

Best wishes,

Kelley

PS ~ If I were there, I'd bring you some chicken soup broth and a Three Stooges flick.
Thank you all for your caring words! I appreciate reading them.
"The show must go on" applies to the show, not the participants. That's why they have understudies. ;-)
Antoine, Kudos to you for your wise decision. Caring for yourself -- and others at the same time by not exposing them, means a lot to me (if not to them as well!). Get well soon. :-)
After a full day's rest, and some great colloidal metals, 3 good meals and the love of my friends, I feel a lot better now.
I had a hard time canceling it, because I really love doing presentations/edutainment, but you win some, you lose some.
Sometimes even a workaholic has to enjoy some mandatory rest.
I know I am getting to this a tad late but it made me think of something I teach my improv students.

If you blow a scene, go back in the mind and redo it until it is satisfying (I suggest to my hypno clients to do this with their "childhood"). So you can experience the successful scene you wanted to do. Besides being a rehearsal process, this is a great way experience an event the way you wanted it to be.

I think it was a very wise decision to rest and consider the health of your audience, which is I believe part of the reason why you do the great work you do right? The health of the audience.

But I asked myself, why does he have to miss out? Now I know you weren't "actually" there, but why can't you live as if you were in the mind and body? This has the twofold benefit of allowing you to experience exactly what you would have gotten from being up in front of audience, the feelings, ideas, thoughts and joy and also might help if you have to cancel in the future.

I mean, we're hypnotists, we understand the world a little differently right? We can imagine "as if". We can live "as if" until the material world mirrors back what we are creating between our ears (or something better). Or at least practice until it feels totally real right?

And hey, what a great story/metaphor for future presentations!

I know it's not the same, but it can feel the same or dare I say even better? We can't stop the meteors from dropping from the sky (yet) but we can point at the craters they make and say "Oh cool! Holes!"

Okay, so that might be a bit Sponge Bob, but I think you get my drift. I'm on this reframing kick and your story inspired me. I imagine you are up and about and living the dream again!

Stay well,

Michael
