Can anyone help me, to any research, and hard figures, on where to target my marketing, and what the profile is of an average hypnotherapy-client?
At this time, I'm working mostly with referrals from md's, and other therapists, but want to get my practice blooming into a nice tree, and found that I needed some input from you, my colleagues.

Any tips, or serious research material?

Antoine,
I read an awesome post with a transcript of an interview with Richard Nongard that I enjoyed immensly.

Not sure if this is what your looking for but I consider Richard a marketing guru.

Antoine - Have you developed your target market - that is, who you want as clients? What age, sex, educational level, income level do you want as clients? Are you focusing on medical hypnosis? Sports? Business? Who do YOU want as clients?

Roger
Antoine,

There are social marketing/PR firms that sell very, very expensive reports that evaluate every aspect and demographic of people using alternative health care that has that kind of info, but I don't know of any "serious" research beyond the CDC's major survey that is easy to get your hands on:

Besides seriousity killed the cat...

My tree has many branches because I marketed myself as a leading expert in helping people reach their goals. I am confident that you have what it takes to do this. Making helping people reach their goals your "GET" will help you spread your wings and develop an eclectic following as you decide where and how you want to grow your practice...

Bruce, Thank you for the link I'll read it as soon as I'm done typing this!

Macka and Roger, yes I am aware that most therapists seem to target a certain clientèle.
Thank you for the reminder!

Michael, I love how you put that : "Besides seriousity killed the cat" I'll have a look at the CDC-link, thank you!

The Netherlandisch attitude is a very sceptic one (not the shitty, but the critical way) and hypnosis, hypnotherapy and coaching still haven't really matured here, so I have to do a lot of educational marketing.
I could target a certain group, or class, but that's not my intention.
At this time, the biggest group to target, are the people who are already into NLP and hypnosis, but I find that ship has sailed, and it's time to have the general public to "open up" for hypnosis, hypnotherapy and coaching.
I want anyone who can benefit from my services to know where to find me, and what I can do for them.
The product sells itself, but it's more the "company image" that needs attention.
Ok, how does this sound: I specialize in overcomming Depression, OCD and Burn-out.
Does that fall into niche-marketing, or is it still too elaborate?

But where do I go to pick up these people?
Where should I advertise?
These are things that I'm currently looking at, because I've worked through my clientèle, like a jet, through the sound-barrier.
I am not sure if you have outlets like public access TV and talk radio -- both have been a great way for me to target clients I want to reach out to...

We have a wide range of peer support groups and they are open to speakers --

Hope this helps

Antoine,

Think about the sources of the issues in which you are expert and you will find their sufferers.

For example, what might cause depression? Obesity, long dark winters, overstressful schedules, divorce, health and relationship problems. Advertise that you provide solutions and make yourself available to other health professionals for referrals. Contact local schools and offer your services to students after hours. Give your card to some divorce lawyers...don't forget to tell them how you can help them!

How about burn-out? Is it more prevalent in certain industries? Would an employer hire you to help burned-out workers?

OCD? Hang out at the local coffee shop and watch for someone who organizes his sugar cubes. joking That's probably a bit more difficult to ferret out and mental health pros will most likely want to keep them to themselves.

I have a good friend who recently returned to the Netherlands after living here for some time. She told me of a bit of suspicion amongst her countrymen regarding ideas like hypnosis, energy work, etc. Perhaps you are a pioneer so imagine who you want to homestead with: young people with curiousity or older folks who might stick to the traditional ways...

Best wishes,

Kelley

The number one best increase I have had in my practice was by...networking!
I have had an ad in a local paper for over two years and have gotten 2 clients from it. I won't be advertising again in a newspaper of any kind.
One visit to two different networking groups (where I did NOT hand out a card...but instead made it all about them, took their cards, called them later to tell them how great it was to meet them - then they asked for my number for a get together some time in the future) and all of a sudden 7 clients with friends.
Also, when I say networking... what I have been finding out (and this has all been a work in progress) it has been proving successful to be helpful to select 'high profile' people in my community. I became friends with the lady who owns the biggest and best coffee shop here in town. She now...has my cards on her counter and I don't regret that move. And I love the decor and their hot choc! It's a win/win.
I've started going to city council meetings. Found out who the town 'matriarch' is. Great lady... and quite the talker. I love her. It's been so much fun, my intentions shifted without me looking.
No longer is it calculated (although...I did have a plan at first) it's now a bit more heartfelt and genuine.
One must walk the road to find out to give (a listening ear, genuine interest in another person, help at a local charity, etc. etc.)...is to get.
People get to see who I am. They trust me....as THEY SHOULD!! haha I'm a very nice person! Ha!
So...Get out there...let people see who you are... and when they need it the most, when they are ready... you will be the first person they think of.

So, there is my tip: give.

I guess that doesn't say much about who I target... does it?
I guess I target the takers. haha.
get it..
I'm a giver..
and uh...then there is the...uh...taker...
err..
ya okay, it was funnier as I was thinking it and before I wrote it.

D.
@ D-
We meet again...

Antoine,

Now that Donna has reminded of the secret of my success -

FYI - I began to distingush myself by doing community service - I facilitated weekly support groups as a director of an all volunteer group that helped people with AIDS that expanded into support groups helping any one with a serious illness who was interested in alternative medicine....

Once the contacts in the NYC health care community were made and I earned people's trust doors started opening that were usually closed to non-licensed health care professionals...

I agree with D -- GIVE-GIVE-GIVE...

Thank you, Kelley, Donna and Michael!
I knew that I would get great answers here, and you all underline my faith in the HT-community.

Antoine,
I forgot to mention it is the pdf file that Richard has listed on niche markets. Not sure if you found it.
