Today I received a phone call from a relative of one of my clients who I’ve been seeing for smoking cessation. My client has emphysema and came to the sessions tethered to an oxygen tank. He had been told that he had 6-9 months to live unless he quit smoking. Needless to say he was very motivated to quit after 57 years of smoking. After 2 sessions he was completely off of cigarettes and was very excited and very proud. The phone call today was to inform me that he would not be in for session #3. He had taken a turn for the worst and had been given only a few days to live. When I heard the news, it broke my heart. In only two sessions (plus a consultation), I had developed a special relationship with this particular client and really “did my all” to help him to be successful only to get this news. While it makes me sad, it also makes me realize what wonderful work, we as hypnotists do. We all have the power to make a difference in people’s lives if we so choose.

Bill,

Very sorry to hear this, how very sad. It sounds as if you did a fab job of giving him some real joy, hope and a sense of achievement in his last few days. You certainly did make a difference, and thank you for using the opportunity to share with us your enthusiasm and encouragement .

Kind regards,
Fiona
You are so right, Bill, and although the outcome isn't as desired, the input you had on his journey makes it better. I imagine that you helped him gain a different perspective on his life during your short time together. May your heart heal quickly knowing this.

Love, Kelley
Well done Bill, it was bad enough that your client was dying but for him to be also the one throwing the switch on his own life makes his last moments far more unbearable. You saved him from that, gave him hope, helped him transfer more peacefully, with more control, and dignity over the way he passed from here to our final journey home!

Namaste

Hi Bill,

Sad news for your client, and upsetting for you. This experience has allowed a wonderful realisation, with the dark, we can see the Light.

My father passed away from Emphysema many years ago as a youngish man, I hope your client doesn't suffer too much and how you touched him will always remain something positive to his family.

Bill, you gave him a wonderful gift, to choose how he wants to live his life. The truth is that none of knows how much time we have. How rich those years, months, days would be if we did the same. Thank you for sharing this. My prayers are with you, your client and his family.
Comfort yourself, by realizing that you gave that man one more victory to add to his list, and the joy of realizing his own strength!
You probably gave him more then you know.
Thank you to all of you for your warm and encouraging thoughts. I've not met any of you but I can say that you're all very special.
