I saw a client today who has come to me for pain relief from her Sacroillitis and Ankylosing Spondylitis.

I have various methods I would normally use for pain relief issues but have no direct experience with these conditions.

She describes herself as always in some degree of pain and in particular she mentioned that it is often uncomfortable for her to relax. In therapeutic work I nearly always suggest relaxation as I deepen the state but find myself wondering if I should steer clear of those suggestions if they may ring alarm bells or cause pain, and if so, what would be the best induction to use in these circumstances?

I would appreciate any advice from the group about how best to approach this.

Hi Tim,

I agree with Jay -- Pain is Pain and Waking Hypnosis is just fine for teaching your client how to take the UNNECESSARY suffering out of her pain-

FYI - A percentage of people with Sacroillitis and Ankylosing Spondylitis have the physical condition, but do not report any pain.

Use a comfort scale: From 1 to 10 1=the most comfort and 10=the least comfort. Ask her what level of comfort are you experiencing now -- That focuses her attention away from the pain--
Ask her when does she experience the most comfort in her day- What is she doing or not doing? What position is she in? If you can use that position when you work with her or have her imagine that she is in that position when working with her.

Explain that pain is not what what people experience - Pain (Nociception) is the neurological signal - Suffering is the reaction that people's minds and brains have to that signal -- You can help her minimize her reaction to the signal in a way that takes the suffering out of pain....

Tell her the fastest way to do that is to release the emotional charge that is associated with the signal
HINT: I often like to collapse anchors to do that - you can model my approach if you like:

Eye closure Tim.

Then focus her ON the pain, take her into it. The problem with pain is that we try and avoid it so the system works harder at telling us there is damage. Take her into the pain and show her how she can decide how it feels - if she visualises change the 'colour' of it.

You will never remove pain if the causing condition is permanent. You can only change the perspective, and in doing so the soft tissue and muscular tension which is making things worse will subside on it's own. Michael hit's the nail pretty much on the head.

The thing I don't get is that even though I have seen you hypnotise without relaxation with my own eyes you still use it... ;-) so do I.

Hello Tim,

I have found Richard Nongard's autogenic process shown in his video to be quite helpful with clients who are experiencing awareness of discomfort. You can use it as an induction, or just teach it on its own.

Best wishes,

Hey everyone, that's awesome. Thanks so much for your input.

I won't be seeing her til next week but plenty of food for thought here.

Also glad to hear that my own initial thoughts on the best approach are in line with such wise minds :)
