Ho Robin,

Is your clients nightmare the same and does it repeat it self?

A usual relaxation with guided imagery can your clients mind by bringing it back to a peaceful, restful state, it usually let go of any fear from the nightmare.

It is best to find out what was the nightmare about, is it related to his currant situation, more like emotional state, and use that in your relaxation.

Hope It helps.

Thanks Doreen,
I haven't yet spoken directly with the potential client, it was an initial enquiry from her concerned mother.I#ll find out more in due course, just thought I'd check what others do.
Again thanks for responding so quickly.

Hi Robin,

Breaking the nightmare down into specifics emotions might be helpful. For example, what components are contained in the nightmare: fear, confusion, humiliation, abandonment? You can use the nightmare in a metaphorical sense to explore real time emotions in the client's life and reframe or dismantle them via NLP or Parts Therapy.

Be sure to empower the client to take control in the nightmare. There was a suggestion on HT to teach the client to be aware of her palms (or any other physical part that resonates with the client) within the dream; that lucidity leads to taking control of the experience.

Best wishes,

Kelley
It might be useful, while the client is in hypnosis, to speak directly to the subconscious mind and ask it what the dream means. Without getting too Freudian, dreams are often the subconscious mind trying to resolve issues from the conscious world. Maybe by asking the SCM what the dream means you will be able to help the client overcome the nightmares by dealing with the real issue in a more positive way.

I should point out this is just a thought, as I have not had much experience with nightmares. This is simply me thinking out load. Having said that I would also suggest not letting the client saying things like "I think it means..." this would show that the conscious mind has refocused itself and is trying to answer. The subconscious mind has all the answers.

Hello Robin'

I read all answers and they are all great, and from my experience only once you find out what is the nightmare is about, just do the usual relaxation with guided imagery to bring your clients mind back to a peaceful, restful state, and it usually let go of any fear from the nightmare, therefore no need to have an ab-reaction or get very emotional if it's not necessary, and if this didn't work, I will start with what others suggested.

The cause of nightmares are usually from stress, anxiety around economy, health problems, medical illness, trauma, fears, insecurities, feelings of inadequacy, grief, marital issues and even depression.

And if they are in depression and or taking medication, I would not do hypnoanalysis unless I have a medical referral. especially when it can cause an ab-reaction or have the client get very emotional.

It's just me...

Whenever I have a puzzling or disturbing dream, I go back to it when I'm in trance, only this time, I ask various things/characters why they are there, or I complete unfinished plot lines, or I rewrite unpleasant endings. I've led some clients through that as well.

I had an adult client who came to see me about a recurring nightmare. We went back into the dream, but we were unable to get any answers as to what it was about. So we simply rewrote it. It's been a few years, and she hasn't had the nightmare since. We still don't know what the nightmare was about, but it doesn't seem to matter.
