From the American Cancer Society's website. Here is the part of the link above that concerns me:

Other methods of quitting

Other tools may also help some people, but there is no strong proof that they can improve your chances of quitting.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis methods vary a great deal, which makes it hard to study as a way to stop smoking. For the most part, reviews that looked at studies of hypnosis to help people quit smoking have not supported it as a quitting method that works. Still, some people find it useful. If you would like to try it, ask your doctor if he or she can recommend a good hypnotherapist.

I've said all along, until we get our own valid research results, this crap will prevail.

Both Oprah Winfrey and Ellen Degeneres have used hypnosis successfully. Perhaps Oprah could be convinced to fund research by real hypnotists.

Other ideas?

p.s.- here's the note I just sent to their "contact us":

As a hypnotist who does have very high success rates with smoking cessation and a list of successful research results on record, I'm curious about why you have written this "information" about hypnosis in your website.  Could it be that much of your funding comes from the pharmaceutical industry???????

It's a pity that the person who wrote that didn't bother checking more thoroughly. The following studies both show hypnotherapy in a very positive light:

http://www.weshouldtalk.co.uk/freestuff/Cognitive%20reactions%20to%...  -  New Scientist  (University of Iowa study)

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/10/071022124741.htm  Science Daily – (Massachusetts General Hospital study)

Also, it's rather a contradiction to say, in one sentence, '..have not supported it as a quitting method that works' and then to suggest that readers ask their doctor to recommend 'a good hypnotherapist'. Surely 'a good hypnotherapist' is one who helps their clients to get the results they want (ergo, hypnotherapy works...). So, which is it, hypnotherapy works or it doesn't work? Talk about mixed messages and sitting on the fence.

I agree that it is a tug of war when it comes to properly evaluating hypnosis. I also love debunking test studies because there are so many contributing factors involved. Below is a good example of a post I replied to on age regression. Mine is the long post at the very end lol.

Anyway, I take it all with a grain of salt because at the end of the day, I did not get into this field to change the world. I got into it to help people change their lives, which I am and that is all that counts.

Funny, the Canadian Cancer Society web page doesn't mention hypnosis at all!

Hi,

FYI - Many of the studies that showed hypnosis was an effective tool for smoking cessation were ignored by the meta-reviewers because they did not meet the basic requirements for combining and re-analyzing all of the acceptable data for their review. These larger computer generated statistics are widely considered the highest authority on the effectiveness of the tools, techniques and drugs used for smoking cessation. Many of the studies that showed a hypnotic technique was effective were rejected because at best the study only showed that a specific hypnotic technique seemed to be effective, but did not justify generally recommending hypnosis. Some of the studies were rejected because they were too small for inclusion. Other studies were rejected because they were poorly organized or designed.

Hi Kathy,

There is more than one way to stroke a cat...

It is possible to generate meaningful research without conventional studies  - We can organize national and international organizations that collect and verify data from medically supervised outcome study groups and combine the outcomes to generate meaningful data.

Warmest regards,

I suspect that this "crap" will prevail even though you do manage to obtain your own valid research results.

There is a multi billion dollar pharmaceutical industry that stands to lose an incredible amount of money should hypnosis receive the attention that (I believe) it deserves. Products whose sales could drop include:

* anti-depressants

* weight-loss supplements

* nicotine patches / chewing gum etc

* antihistamines

* blood pressure control pills

And that´s a very small proportion of the potentially huge global impact!

Did you know your diesel car can run perfectly on vegetable oil? Even if you live in a cold climate, you can fit a simple heat exchanger so it´ll run alright. Unfortunately there´s a billion dollar petrolium economy that makes sure people keep buying petrolium, and pushes car manufacturers in the direction of designing engines that only recommend "proper" diesel.

Our economies keep the information from being properly distributed, keep it discredited, because there´s more money to be made (by some) elsewhere.

But I hope I´m wrong.
