SHY BLADDER, difficulty in voiding urine in public toilets

I have an adult male patient who has difficulty in voiding urine in presence of other people.
He is okay at home or if alone in the toilet.
I have tried suggestive hypnosis and NLP techniques to make him feel confident or overcome phobia,
Age regression and past life regression has not helped so far.
Any suggestions?

I too will be interested in the responses here. Over the years I have had a few clients come in for help with the "pee shy" problem and have been frustrated that the techniques that have been so effective with other unhealthy fears (regression to cause, parts therapy, the NLP technique of collapsing anchors, various scripts, etc) have met with complete resistance each time. If anyone has been successful, please share what worked for your client!
To get more information: do you talk in his language? ie: specific senses?
I just throw this out there because it is so common to over look. If he 'doesn't see it like that' or if he 'sees what you are saying' and yet...you are talking to him like "how does that make you feel" sort of way... it could be an error in 'how' you are giving the suggestions?

Very true, Donna. Even now, after 10 years, I forget that most people are visual and I will find myself talking in my language (kinesthetic). When they don't respond, I often change to visual and find that they respond. So simple but so important.

Get him to forgive, release, and let go of this, no matter where it came from, in ways, both known and unknown to him. Let him go into a light state of trance, self-hypnosis, when he has to go, tuning out all other people and distractions, focusing on the needed relief, so well deserved.
I did write a script for this years back that works, it's in my book. As I recall, the person I wrote this for was taunted and somewhat attacked in High School by other boys when at the urinal in High School, je was kicked into his backside while going and when he locked himself into a stall, they lobbed wet paper-towels over the top, more taunting.
He stopped homself from going with others around as a form of self-protection.

I would suggest parts therapy. You can find out why he is doing it and change the behavior

Dr. Shah, et al,

Perhaps the problem is not the technique that you are using but rather -- failing to excite your clients imaginations and creating the beliefs necessary for any technique to work as effectively as possible

From this point on, I think it is best to focus on giving your client a reason to believe that going through the next hypnotic process that you are going to be guiding him through is going to be the one that finally helps him!

Hint: I often tell clients with this issue that the reason their previous hypnosis did not help them is because their bladder is not shy-- the problem is the result of unwanted brain-bladder conditioning and I know how hypnosis can help them break that pattern-- blah, blah, blah

What ever technique I use afterwards is glorious fluff - they were hypnotized in my intake/pre-talk---

I hope this helps...
Hello Dr.Sobhag,

OK, First I agree with every one here, great suggestions.... This is what I have done with adult and children with an exact the same issues, and the case was solved in one to few sessions.

I don't know what exactly you did, but if you email me privately or here, more likely step by step, I will re direct you with how to do it differently.

Right now this person needs to learn that it is important for him to to urinate without holding back no matter what....
and that is his goal coming to you....

You will make sure he drinks enough water, so that he becomes uncomfortable during hypnosis, suggesting him that when it becomes uncomfortable, he will raise his left index finger as letting you know that he must go to the restroom now! ( It is important that he will use the bathroom while he still in your office ) or he can say I need to go now, followed by opening his eyes.... you will give him a suggestion that he will go and use the bathroom anytime during the session, but he is still be in hypnosis, even though he feels wide awake... tell him you are still in hypnosis!

Also make sure you direct him to the bathroom to urinate, from your office to the bathroom, using the description such as: you open the door, walk through the walkway, go to the mans room, they could be other people or none, but you still feel great and calm, peeing into the toilet, and feel the release, how great you feel, notice the feeling, Releaseeeeee...very go..let it go...feeling a huge Releaseeeee ( saying it slowly....) as you still peeing into to the toilet, make sure that you have emptied your bladder, see yourself flashing the water nowwwwww, feeling so good and confident, not caring who is around, washing your hands nowwwwwww, smiling and coming back to the recliner, and as soon he as you lay downnnnnnnnnnnn, you allows your eyes to close and drift dipper into a grate hypnotic trance, feeling good..... and continue with with a metaphor of him being somewhere playing baseball or what ever he likes, drinking cool lemonade, since it is sunny and hot outside, feeling the soothing water chilling and calming his thirst.... and so on.... and now as you play more, you feel the need to pee, ( I will use pee, instate of urinate, if it is how he uses the urine act...)

Make sure to remind him that : by saying, from now on it becomes more and more easier to pee in public, where in the past you were not able to for what ever reasons, but from now on it becomes part of your new routine, it is the new you, confident, believing in yourself, where in the past, your ego, YES, your ego was running your life and telling by tricking you into not peeing in public places, not caring how your ego was selfish for damaging your health, how ridiculous he was to mislead you... and letting you believe that peeing in public places were not acceptable...from now on, you tell him, that it is your body and you are taking control, no more ego controlling you, you are in control of your body and well being...

Then you create an audio CD to reinforce that.... sure later you can work on other issues... make sure cognitively you explain to him the medical danger as to holding back his urine, make sure you become a little graphic, urine balder infection and what ever is related to having future health issues.. It is important to do that before and during hypnosis as well, so his mind can make a decision to choose the new healthy habit.

Hope you come back with his testimonial :) Respectfully Doreen
PS: During my 6 years of practice I had almost 20 cases like that and they all worked, using the same method...
I have had several clients with this issue. To a man, using EFT worked out perfectly. In fact, should the issue even begin to "return", the client can leave the restroom area....or go into a stall and do his EFT tapping.

Good Luck. This one is very hard on guys. It's like males don't deserve the same privacy as females (enclosed stalls).....just whip it out and spray like a horse. Nice, very nice.
Hi William,

Bravo... I agree that EFT will be affective as well, I thing using both will be rewarding as well.

Doreen
I thank you all for your great ideas. As ideas flowed in, I greedily waited for more of them. EFT has also been tried, with no success. I had actually planned to call the client on a full bladder. Doreen’s script fits the bill. I will try it out when I see him next. By the way, he is kinaesthetic. Sometimes it is easy to forget to talk in their modalities.
lol.. I didn't even realize that my script fit the kinesthetic person, well that is because I am kinesthetic, and I use all of it in my hypnosis sessions, just in case, I am not sure how my client learners... I usually learn and teach best when I have the freedom to move around engaging my entire muscle groups. Being a hypnotherapist I have been attracting many kinesthetic learners, especially children and adult teachers or students..

Looking forward to hearing back from you.... Doreen
This is in my "top ten" of issues we can blast off the face of the earth using hypnosis. Here is the problem. These guys (98% of them are guys) are afraid that they might get WORSE with hypnotherapy and so they are afraid to come to us. This is a very serious problem and some of the sufferers can't even use the bathroom in their own house unless everyone else leaves. Imagine not being able to relieve yourself except under those conditions. You could be a prisoner in your own home.

I have a close friend with this issue who is too afraid to use hypnosis.

There is an organization in Baltimore that has weekend retreats where they teach people with this condition (paruresis) to catheterize themselves! I have a standing offer that I will treat (with physician referral) any person with this condition... for free. Hypnotherapy has the potential to knock this out and I would love to prove that.
