Suggestions for working with client who produces too much saliva

I have a 65 year old client who produces too much saliva. He's been to ENT specialists and there is no organic cause. The saliva production increases as his attention focuses on the issue. He has also developed a sucking response that has become a "habit."
He is a psychotherapist. I will be encouraging him to practice "beginner's mind." He had a hard time staying out of his role as therapist.
Our initial consultation revealed that he has struggled with nervous "tics" throughout his life. When he was 14, he read an article about using the power of the mind to stop his tics. At this time he was compulsively clenching and unclenching his leg and arm muscles. He spent an hour "willing" himself to stop, and was successful.
He is hard of hearing and wears hearing aids. Because of this, he can't recline fully with his aids in because they will whistle. He removed them during the session and I positioned myself next to his head and spoke louder than my usual volume. He did go into trance. I've decided to have him sit up more at our next session so that he can keep his hearing aids in. This way, I can feel more relaxed and natural. I believe if I am relaxed, my client will be more relaxed. : )
I'm looking for suggestions on ways to work with this client. I have considered suggesting he "dial down" the saliva production and taking him back to the time when his breathing and saliva production were "normal".
I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Hi Lisa,

Although I have never had a client present who produces excessive amounts of saliva, I have had several who have the opposite problem. Most hypnos are adept at helping a client increase salivation through suggestions employed by imagery (think lemon convincer).

I suggest that you introduce this client to a "control room" in his mind. Spend some time familiarizing him with the different aspects of himself, physical and emotional...let him play there for a while with metrics of temperature, tension (relaxation), itch and giggle factors, for example, to create belief that he does have control of how he feels and responds. When this is demonstrated, go ahead and address the issue in particular. This would be a good way to incorporate your "dial" idea, while first preparing for and insuring success.

I would also allow this client to access his own inner healer/guide at a "deeper" trance level and let him spend some time asking questions and receiving help at that place, suggesting that the part of him that helped him stop the tics can now go to work addressing this salivation problem.

Remember to have fun! Chances are that he has been engrossed in the serious aspects of how drooling makes him feel and possibly look...he may just like to laugh a bit about the whole situation. A story about babies who drool eventually learn to stop might be the way to go.

Best wishes,

Kelley

PS ~ On second thought (thank you, subconscious for that reminder!) I have helped dental clients reduce or regulate their saliva flow...you can tell him how you often help in this area!

Thank you Kelley!
