As I currently do not have a space to see clients, I'm thinking about working with clients via the telephone..preferably Skype using a web cam. I'm curious if anyone in this group is working remotely and if so, how did you set up your system.

I've worked with clients via the telephone in the past when they were unable to get to my office and had excellent results. My husband is setting up my website and I would like very much to use it to promote hypnotherapy, life mastery coaching, NLP, voice dialogue, meditation, and inspired creativity sessions using Skype. I also plan to post free guided meditations and visualizations for those who want to experience my approach and style.

I'd love feedback: information on fees/session length/payment, experiences, results, problems encountered, etc.

I'm fairly new to Hypnothoughts, but am planning to be more involved.

Hello Elizabeth,

I'm wondering about this too. I've never done hypnosis via phone either. Do they use speaker phone so they don't have to hold the phone, or do you add in the suggestion that they are easily able to hold the phone throughout the session? Any suggestions you can offer are appreciated.

Thank you!

There is a group called "skypenosis" in the group section. Lots of people do phone/skype sessions. In fact I spent time tonight with John Cerbone doing a session for pre-surgical preparation (I am having a joint replacement surgery on Thursday) and will spend some time with Hugh Cole tomorrow doing a session. Post surgery I will probaly spend some time with each of them doing skypenosis. As for holding the phone, I think clients do better on speakerphone or skype with a headset. I have never done a session with someone holding an actual phone - that so 1990's LOL

skype works very well
I just had a practice session with a friend in the states ...(I am in Australia )
it really is not that different from being in the room with them :-)
I'm interested in trading even MORE Skype hypnosis sessions with other hypnotherapists. I offer Hypno-Healing which includes Ultra-Height(tm). What I have to offer may be different than what others have to offer. It's fascinating because nearly every session I give and receive with others I learn something new. So, add me as friend, and also on Skype (user name: cynthia.atttar - note: 3 t's) and lets do some trading sessions!
Hi Melanie,
You need a headset with a built-in mike and apparently a webcam. I still don't have the webcam, so haven't moved forward with this project. They can be had for $20-30, but I'm looking at the one Skype offers that's on a swivel and follows you if you move around. I want to use it for creating videos for my website as well. I think it runs around $60. The whole idea is to have your hands free and to be able to fully focus on the client and also take notes as needed. I'll let you know more about my experience when I get the webcam.

I would imagine that about the only can't do is anchor with touch, however, you can still accomplish that with a verbal anchor and suggestion.

I do phone / skype sessions when a client is to far, unable to come into the office, or more comfortable at their own house and have been successful. I agree with what the others have said would recommend a headset and that the client use a speakerphone / headphone, otherwise they will get uncomfortable quickly. Also I charge the same as my in office visit ($119.00 first session $99.00 additional), which cements the fact that they are getting the same quality service as an office visit.
Skype works extremely well and so does ooVoo I use Skype often now as my Client base includes folks in New England, Colorado, South Texas, Mexico, and Asia. A word to the wise don't scrimp on the camera and don't use the built in Mics. Use a headset to maintains a fixed distance between your mouth and the Mic. It really helps particularly if you rely on subtle voice ques.. Speaker phone is OK for the client, But I prefer they wear headphones. I am in fact experimenting with a noise canceling headset that I will ask them to buy when we set up our initial contract.

A decent headset for sykpe can be purchased at walmart of office depot for $20.
A good webcam is essentail. I only use logitech, and only the 2.0 megapixel - you will spend about $100 for this.
I do some webcam sessions and have found them especially helpful for people with severe anxiety and people who are either in a no-English speaking country or who have difficulty travelling. If the client is comfortable with technology then it is an ideal solution. I personally only do hypnosis when I have a video link with the other person as I like to have visual feedback. There have been a few occasions when there has been a problem with the webcam and we have worked with audio only but I find them much harder work because I have to adapt my normal way of working.

A few of the things that I would recommend are:

Make sure the client understands the importance of putting aside a time when they will not be disturbed. Because they are at home there could be other family members wandering around, people calling round or phoning. I usually send a checklist before the session, reminding them to make sure the phone is swtiched off, they don't have anything that might distract them and that they are sitting comfortably. I also explain what will happen if we lose the connection.

Make sure you do the same for yourself - switch off all your phones and any computer applications that might make noises or flash up on the screen.

If you're working with people in other time zones make certain you're both agreed what time you've arranged and if there are any daylight saving adjustments needed.

I always allow an extra half hour for the first session to allow for any webcam problems. The client may not regularly use a webcam so may have problems logging on or getting the sound set up correctly. I prefer them to use headphones because that reduces the chance of your own voice feeding back which can be very offputting. Even on following sessions I will still allow time for technical problems as you can never predict when they will happen.

I prefer Skype over IM as it usually seems to give better quality. I have had a few occasions where the picture has locked up completley and if we're still in the talking part of the session then I'll usually suggest we cut the connection and reconnect. If we're already well into the session though I'll just carry on. The very first session I ever did we lost the connection about 5 times and I just called back each time, he reconnected and we went straight on with the session. That is the worst I have ever had.

On a technical note, make sure the lighting stays consistent. I did a session earlier in the year in late afternoon. It was nice and sunny when I started, but the sun went down quickly and it was very gloomy when I finished.

My clients have ranged from someone about 2 miles from my office who wouldn't come to my office initially because of her anxiety (she did finally come and see me in person which was great!) to people in Australia and South America. (I'm based in the UK)

I hope that helps.
Sharon
