I know this may seem a little strange, but has anyone ever seen the film "The Fourth Kind"?

I watched it this week, and was appalled at the way that the alleged footage showed people being hypnotized for regression into their past memories with no means of safeguarding them in place. I was taught long ago to ensure that the subject is kept from trauma, and have always taught others the same. Hypnosis means that the person doesn't just remember things, but literally relives the experiences in their mind when in the somnambulistic state. I see it as the equivalent of using live bullets in a reconstruction of a crime!

Does anyone else have any experience of seeing people repeating a mental trauma during therapy this way? I have had many cases where people have "re-lived" childhood abuse or traumatic events and come to me for treatment, and I have never once asked them to repeat the experience. Instead I resolve the issues, which then allow them to face the historical events without the pain attached if they choose to.

Does anyone here try to de-sensitize their clients by making them face their trauma? I just don't see the benefit there.

And by the way, Robert, I applaud your method of keeping the client present and working toward resolution. What possible good can come of going back to a state of helplessness?
The Fourth Kind IS based upon a true story . . . sort of. There were disappearances in Nome and many of them were unexplained. Most of the folks who disappeared were native Americans. When the FBI investigated they found a number of common factors in the disappearances . . . native men coming in to Nome from smaller villages on or around pay day . . . cold weather . . . alcohol. Before the FBI investigation, there was a belief that there was a serial killer at work (the terrestrial kind rather than the fourth). A number of bodies were eventually uncovered, although others were still lost. Some of the deaths were likely robberies - locals likely rolling drunks with paychecks (note that the alcoholism incidence among the victims was not low) or folks getting drunk and then wandering out into the cold. No alien connection was ever found in the actual cases . . . but . . . then again . . . the perhaps the FBI covered it all up and put all those files of real evidence along with the real hypnosis footage into a storage cabinet full of files with a big X on them. That would explain why the documentary footage had to be re-created for the film. Or, maybe it's just really good marketing. :-) It would not be the first time very real personal tragedies were exploited and twisted so that someone could make a profit off the misery of others.

All the best,
Brian
