the Free Hypnosis Social Network
Hypnotist Tom Silver made a good point on his Facebook page. Here it is: This is why hypnotists and hypnotherapists should be concerned. Hypnosis degrees and certifications are binging sold without any care or concern for academic training. Hypnotherapy degrees without proper education and training may make hypnosis illegal soon to the unlicensed therapist! Look at the document now being sold on Ebay.

1.) Not one single state can afford another regulatory board, and is not going to make it a budget priority.
2.) Hypnosis is IMPOSSIBLE to regulate. You would have to regulate coaches, parents, teachers, ministers, TV/radio, etc. It just is unregulatable, which is why NO state has such regulation. Think about it. 50 states. NOT ONE stops the unlicensed hypnotist from practicing. If this were even a real issue at least ONE state would have done it. Sure there are some states with registration rules, other with requirements for informed consent, others that restrict certain terms, but not even one little-itty-bitty state stops it. Why? It can't be done. It is like putting a camel through the eye of a needle...

It seems that HypnoThoughts is the perfect place to house a "for private members" group to address this concern of impending changes (don't kid yourselves, change will happen!). How about it, James? I, like you, am one of the babes who could potentially fly with the bathwater...

There is more than one way to make a practice obsolete - Notice-- the systematic ways hypnosis is being replaced by mindfulness, meditation and imagery in the medical media...

Why don’t you list your seven points so that everyone can read your position in less than a minute rather than 21 minutes..

Permalink Reply by Marc Whipple on November 14, 2011 at 6:42pm I find it interesting how on the one hand, hypnosis is so incredibly powerful that it can lower your blood pressure, boost your immune response, reduce bleeding during surgery, relieve IBS, cure you of phobias, relieve horrible pain, relieve insomnia, depression, and even make your breasts larger, yet is simultaneously so weak and ineffectual that literally anyone can do it, and no matter how unskilled, untrained, ignorant and/or abusive the practitioner is, he or she is "mostly harmless."
Permalink Reply by April Braswell on November 28, 2011 at 3:19pm I am actually very glad that hypnosis is so free from regulation, and certainly in oft over-regulated California.
What I cover with clients is about my years of experience, and how getting certified added layers of professional ethics. I share a few particular stories which I won't go into. My whole professional background (Fortune 50 companies, top 10 college) combine to be part of the value I bring to clients, and is reflected also in my fees which are more than a Massage Therapist or Manicurist (the hypnotists who are perhaps both young and inexperienced level of $40 p/hour fees).
I love how open hypnosis is. And then we also learn to choose and decide for ourselves who we want to work with.
This is a great conversation/discussion topic. Even though I am not agreeing with all you are concerned about, James, I certainly mean no disrespect in my response.
Cheers!
Happy Hypno Holidays to you all,
April Braswell
Permalink Reply by Brian David Phillips on November 28, 2011 at 11:11pm Agreeing with Richard Nongard, the certificate is clearly a gag gift and NOT intended for anyone to take seriously. There are folks who run diploma mills but this is not one.
This in no way means that those with a concern regarding general competencies are not without merit in their arguments, it's just that this particular item should not be confused with someone who is selling a certificate intended to commit fraud with.
I have a Doctorate from Arkham University and an old Blue Blaze Irregulars membership card. I used to have a KISS Army Membership card as well, long long ago when my musical tastes were not what they are today. No one takes them seriously, nor do I . . . but I am rather happy to have the beasties.
