Just had a thought, instead of making your subject a non smoker, would it be so terrible to make him forget how to smoke? I have not tried this yet but would like to know what you guys thought.

This is a classic example of the triggers I have spoken about before. These triggers are what cause us to automatically smoke without thinking about it. The same reason they will light up a cigarette, when they already have one burning in the ash tray. Remove the triggers, and they forget to smoke. Much easier, believe me.
