I would like to know if any of you have ever had a weight loss client that tells you that they have actually gained weight, (4 lbs the week she saw me) Client states she crawls in to bed because she is so unmotivated, cries uncontrollably, and is a basket case. Client wonders if it could be the hypnosis.
This has not happened to me before. I used a wonderful script, future paced to a time in the near future that she will be meeting someone new seeing herself looking fit and healthy, used suggestions that she now desires lean healthy proteins, fruits and veggies. She no longer craves chocolate or sugary fattening foods. She exercises now, so I added her motivation to exercise, did ego strengthening and stress relief. All of these feelings would remain with her as everyday she feels stronger and stronger...etc. I am curious how would you respond to client? What might you do at the next session? Client has many issues...fyi.
Thank you

Roy....one of the reasons age regression hypnotherapy is discouraged is that it could create false memory (the subconscious mind does not know the difference between fantasy and reality). Or it could dredge up trauma in childhood that would cause even more serious consequences. For instance, if suppressed childhood abuse is revealed in hypnosis, we have just taken away their right to prosecute the perpetrator, because hypnosis-tainted testimony is inadmissable in a court of law. When I regress a client, I only take them back to the time of the cause and we work from that point.

I notice that many hypnotists either avoid the use of hypnotic regression themselves, or in some cases even criticize the use of regression. That reluctance has been mentioned on this thread.

Let me start my response to regression critics by stating that I do not use regression for all the clients all the time…only for some of the clients some of the time. Those who criticize the use of regression are entitled to their own opinions; but my own professional opinion regarding regression, stated below, is based on 26 years of professional experience…

When there is a primary core cause rooted in the past, regression to discover and release the ISE (initial sensitizing event) has a high probability of providing lasting benefits for the client.

The late Charles Tebbetts (my original teacher) taught a very important concept when he stated: “If the problem is removed by suggestion or some other quick fix, but the cause still remains buried in the subconscious, then the subconscious is perfectly capable of either returning the same problem…or something worse.” Whether or not regression is employed, simply suggesting away a problem is like taking an aspirin to temporarily remove pain. Until the cause of that pain is healed, the pain will return.

Years ago a man saw a hypnotist to get a quick “phobia cure” for fear of flying when his employer sent him to Sydney. Although he was OK on the outbound flight, his subconscious bought back the problem before the return flight. He told me that he had 17 of the most terrifying hours of his life flying over the Pacific Ocean, and thought he was going to have a heart attack.

Anyone using hypnotic regression needs to be competently trained first. When you are competently trained in regression techniques, you WILL get results by employing it properly. So let me end this comment with another quote from my late mentor:

"Results speak louder than words." Tebbetts got results with regression, as have I over the years.

You might consider reading REGRESSION THERAPY by Randal Churchill, a book that should be in the library of every practicing hypnotherapist. You can get it directly from his website at:

Hello, Walt!

The use of a CD is effective for a short period of time. It should be recorded in a session with a live hypnotherapist with whom you have developed rapport and changed frequently as you progress in your weight loss program to address whatever new issues come up. If you continue to use the same CD after you have conquered a particular weight loss issue, the subconscious mind will take in the inference that you still have the problem. This will be counter-productive to your weight loss efforts.

All,

This is an interesting thread for me as I need to lose around 80 pounds.

I've been using a cd program from someone I know and respect. It has helped me lose 20 pounds. After 3 months of daily practice with the program I started to dislike using it. It became annoying. My weight loss leveled out. Then my use dropped to once a week. Weight loss....????

However, I think using a cd is like using a standard script. It does/can not take the individual into account. Reading your comments makes me believe that I need to work with a real, live hypnotherapist. I think I know what the underlying issues are(I've been asking).

Thanks, Walt
Hello Walt.

CD's for weight loss are most effective when recorded in a session by a hypnotherapist with whom you have developed rapport. The CD should be changed after you have conquered each particular weight loss challenge. If you continue to utlize the same CD after you have conquered a weight loss issue, the subconscious mind will take in the inference that you still have the problem. That might be the reason you are now annoyed with the CD program you are using.

I hope this helps.

Hi Doreen,
Thank you for the great advise. My client came to me asking for motivation to exercise and wants to lose 25 lbs by February. This is about accurate in my opinion. She is meeting a man she's talked to since 2006. In my opinion, she has self sabotage going on, (she disagrees) and in addition, many other issues that either I am not qualified to help her with, or our therapy needs to continue to address at a later date. Maybe I did future pace her too quickly, however, she initally came for one session, with the request she wants to exercise more and lose her desire to chocolate. After the 1st session, she decided she wanted 3 more. I sent her with a recording of the session to listen to during the 2 weeks as reinforcement.
My second session with her is Monday. I believe I will use Parts Therapy. Would you agree?

Hi Sue,

First to answer your question as if the client gained weight because of the hypnotic suggestion or not, If you helped her quit smoking then yes It is possible, and if you are helping her with weight loss, then the 4 pound have nothing to do with hypnosis, It is easily to drop the bomb on you and on the hypnosis session, this way she is protected from being blamed or accused. If I had client who tolled me that they gained from my hypnotic session, oh yes, many times, and I did explained to them how hyonosis work again, and pointed out that for them to lose weight they must want it deeply, and YES they will say this is what I want and this is why I am here... then you say, Great, In this case, you must understand that that we need to work together as a team to help you lose weight, and make sure I can find out what is the hidden cause.

Also remind the client that it takes time to get out of her old comfort zone, also you must recognize the issue, this client is telling you out loud I am depressed, she tells you that she crawls into bed, and that she is unmotivated, cries uncontrollably, and that she is a basket case.

And Hypnosis is everything to help her to gain confidence, motivation, new positive image, and find out if she is on medication, have diabetics, high cholesterol, drinks? all this can help her gain more...

Find out what are her eating habits?

Also I suspect you worked too fast with having her face her future where she will be meeting someone new... I think her future and finding her soul mate is the trigger for her weigh gain, If I am correct, you can work with her on her fear of not having a partner, but now concentrate on having her be healthy, exercising, eating right, being motivated, boost her self esteem etc...

What is her weight and height, what was her weight when she was younger?
and what is her perfect weight that she want to be?

All the best, Doreen Cohanim C.Ht

Hi Sue,

Sure you can do the part therapy and If you do, please make sure you work with one part at a time, since sometimes it takes longer to connect with that part, that specific part may have many answers and therefore will take time to get the right answers, and In my opinion, you can start with relaxation, do the part therapy and finish with boosting her motivation, self esteem and confidence.

Make sure you tell her this: you are doing it all for yourself, because it feels great, and you know how wonderful it feels when you do it for yourself and no one else… This is to reinforce the suggestions that she is doing it for herself and not for someone else, tell her other people love the person she is, and when she loves, respect and except herself, others will do the same…then get her to no as an agreement… isn't it?... (Tell her node your head if you agree) continue saying to her, It's about time to make you and the little one ( calling her Inner Child by her first name) Happy, remember once you are happy, your Inner mind will find the power to help you succeed, add exercise, and if she is lazy, give her little tasks to do, some reticules time such as 2 minutes, and you will see that in her next session, she will be reporting back that she did much more and it was easy.

Losing 25 pounds by February is possible, make sure she eats well and drinks well, food is great to get her metabolism work bets... starvation will not help her lose weight.

All the best, Respectfully Doreen Cohaniim C.Ht
