Hi Guys,

I would appreciate any thoughts regarding the use of hypnotherapy to assist weight loss. It is the one area that I find a poor success rate in terms of clients not achieving their stated goal and also I get more people that cancel second apts, never to be seen again, far more than any other client group. i utilise a number of therapeutic strategies to assist these clients e.g. direct suggestions, regression, parts therapy, indirect suggestions etc. No one strategy appears to lead to a better outcome.

Have others had a similar experience or a strategy that works really well. Any ideas, as I am finding working with this client group demoralizing.

Hmmmmm this is a difficult one as you are adapting your approach, my one question and please don't take this the wrong way would be are you expecting your client to adapt to you or are you adapting to your client ?

Other than that how long do you spend questioning them on their eating habits etc I would say this is the bread and butter of hypnotherapy so it's good to get it right.

Are they truly motivated to change ? Are there any secondary gains ?

What numbers are we talking about here that are failing ?

John,

This is a much more difficult session as the client is not giving up something and rather changing the way they look at food and eating. I do a three session package for this very reason. I charge for the three session package up front as I give a small reduction in the package price vs. individual sessions. Also on your comment "NO ONE STRATEGY APPEARS TO LEAD TO A BETTER OUTCOME", I do not think only one "STRATEGY" as you put it would be effective or the only thing I would use in a session as I use a combonation of your list if not all on occassion. Each has their purpose and usually or not in my opinion a stand alone process.

Hi Jonathan,

Thats for the reply, I am using a range of techniques to fit the needs of the client so I'm unsure why you ask "are you expecting your client to adapt to you".

Hi

I have tons of experience working with weight loss clients and I think if you are going to be really successful in this area you also need become an expert on nutrition. There is a recent post on metabolic typing and that is a good place to start. Also any books by Gary Taubes.

Positive Changes Hypnosis in the US sell weight loss program (as do many others) and they really educate their clients on nutrition. (I don't think much of their hypnosis processes but their nutrition advice is very good)

Many clients will tell you that they eat healthily but when you start asking them exactly what they eat you will find that the majority of what they eat is high glycemic carbs in the form of bread, pasta, rice and cereals. Because they are in low in fat some people think that, that means they won't make you fat. But they do.

You also need to break the diet cycle. Low calorie diets, although they work short term often lead to plateus and the reason is because their metabolism slows down because of the calorie restriction. Read, Diets Don't Work. Bob Schwartz

Stress and eating too fast is also a problem. Read The Slow Down Diet.

Then there is the subject of exercise. Aerobic exercise is totally overrated as a way of losing weight. I have clients who are running, swimming, aerobics classes 6 nights a week and still not losing weight. I am not saying this doesn't build cardiovascular fitness, it just is not a good way of losing weight. Why?

Well there are a number of reasons.

1. Gyms, aerobic classes say things like "you will burn (300) calories an hour in our class. The assumption here is that by doing the class you are burning an extra 300 calories. Will you?...... No cos you will burn 150 calories sitting around doing nothing! So for all that sweat, effort and pain you have only burned an extra 150 calories! Not fat, calories.

2. If your diet is rich in carbs your body will be awash will blood sugar. Your muscles will be full of glycogen. You have to work out for at least an hour just to put a dent in that. So all that time you are not burning fat, you are burning stored sugar. If you then "rehydrate" your self with a sports drink or an orange juice, bang! you are right back where you started.

3. Too much aerobic exercise will stress out your body and that will cause weight gain.

4. You only burn excess calories while you are doing the exercise (although some dispute this)

5. Many people find that exercise MAKES them hungry!

The best exercise for weight loss is progressive weight training. As we age if we have a sedentary lifestyle we will lose muscle. If we lose muscle our metabolism will slow down. According to Jorge Cruise in the book 8 minutes in the morning if we lose 5 pounds of muscle we will GAIN 25 pounds of fat in the next twelve months! The good thing is the opposite is true. If you gain 5 pounds of muscle you will lose 25 pounds in the next twelve months... without dieting.

Not only do you burn calories while you work out but once you build the muscle you will be burning extra calories even while you sleep!

I think it is really important to know all this stuff.

If you combine this with the behavioral change techniques that you already know then you will start to get success.

I think it is also a good idea to sell packages of sessions 4/6/8 and charge up front. With weight loss, like smoking the more you charge the more motivated they will be.

I am sure many others will give you advice about techniques but if you get stuck let me know.

I hope this helps

Hi Barry,

Thanks for the reply

. I cover all the aspects you talk about, nutirtion, food types, blood sugar, stress, exercise, sleep; as part of my assessment and build all the info into the therapy given. All therapy i provide is personalized for the specific needs of the individual.

How long is your first sesson?

Approx 1:15mins 50 mins assessment then 20mins of therapy. I would see 1 weight loss client per month on average.

As you can guess.... there are many ways of doing the right thing.

My approach to weight loss is: Gaining health. I like to change the focus off their weight and onto...'what is healthy?'

And although I have my own ideas on what is healthy.. (as you will see in the other nutrition discussions)... I like to encourage and motivate clients to educate themselves on how to become healthy. Starting with 'ingredients'... WHAT exactly...are they eating? Allowing them to become more aware of their choices. Looking at labels is a winner. To start...only eating things that have 5 ingredients or less...and they must be ingredients they know what they are. (once again, carried over from a different discussion...they become invested...if you give them projects such as finding out WHAT they are eating.)

I avoid calorie counting of any kind. My main idea is that....your body is wonderful and amazing in knowing what it needs. If it's hungry - it's seeking nutrition. <--- Once they buy into that idea.... you have got yourself a WINNER!

If you eat chips... and then are still hungry, that tells you...you didn't give your body nutrients (but most people know that...don't they?). IMO many people who are overweight are malnutritioned. Give them real food nutrients....and they not only start losing weight, they stop being excessively hungry.

Again, as you might guess (from other discussions)....yes, I encourage more vegetable eating.

I also encourage education by reading books.  Such as...Sugar Blues.  since....sugar is poison ~eyebrows raised~  to the mind and body.

I also encourage 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise ~grin~ (lol...I just can't catch a break Barry!).... walking, swimming....they are both good for your heart and your mind.

But...essentially...how they choose to find health...is up to them...

One other way to find success and having them coming back to you when they need to....is.... a better pre-talk.

I love the idea of Neurons that fire together...wire together...    the workings of the brain and how repetition is KEY to creating that connection. Repetition is KEY to creating that connection. (yes, say it again...to your client) Key to...wiring together a response to your thoughts. Neurons that fire together...wire together.... so we want repetition of healthy, good thoughts...that motivate us to make the choices we want to make. Repetition! And...for me, because...I also study Operant conditioning and believe in that power.  I like to include Reinforcement... reinforcement with a forward pace is an awesome way to really hedge your bets. :)

So...repetition is key. Some people can repeat on their own...some people need more hands on... and make more appointments. Both...are acceptable. I usually give my clients a bit of time...and then call to check up on them... "Have you been listening to the audio?" (I record our session...cut out the bits not needed and send them an mp3) "how is that working for you?"

Peace,

D.

 Hi Donna,

Thanks for that, I appreciate your constructive comments and the approach you take in the follow up.

Hi John ~

I have an 8 week Hypnosis for Weight Loss Program. Being a full time Personal Fitness Trainer (over 30 years) and also a Life Coach allows me the opportunity to incorporate these tools. I do life coaching throughout the program, add in my hypnosis, refer them to my nutritionist who is the Advanced Metabolic Advisor that I posted in another post, in order to find out any food sensitivities or insulin problems the client may have, give them charts (pedometer) to keep track of their daily workouts, journaling, food charts.  In other words I am their "Coach", support system and friend.

Gail

HI Donna,

The metabolic typing diet does exactly the same thing that you mention. It advises eating nutrient dense food. The only difference is that it is about working out the amounts of proteins/fats and carbs that suits the individual client.

As i said aerobics is great for cardiovascular fitness but not good for weight loss. There is a lot of scientific research that backs this up.

I didn't talk about the therapy side but I agree repetition is very important. I give my clients CDs to listen to between sessions as I think it is really important.

John, are you seeing your clients weekly? If not then this is important. I have found that if you leave 2/3 weeks between sessions then in my experience the results are not as good.

I would be inclined to phone the clients who don't come back to find out why. Then if a pattern emerges then you can address that.

It is worth bearing in mind however that you are never going to achieve 100% success with weight loss. (if you do let me know and I will market the seminars!)

have fun

Barry
