Hi everyone,

I want to visit a hypnotherapist to get my mind programmed for doing selfhypnosis, but there is no any hypnotherapist in my state. So i have to visit a psychiatrist instead.

Can any one please explain the difference between psychiatrist and hypnotherapist? I want to know whether a psychiatrist uses hypnosis or not.

Hi Aashish,

As you know a psychiatrist is a person with a medical degree and is licensed as a physician. They may or may not have any real training or even interest in hypnosis. I would think that if the particular psychiatrist doesn't feel competent to work with hypnosis at all he or she would likely know of someone who does. A hypnotherapist may or may not have a degree at, may or may not be licensed in any mental health related field. A hypnotherapist specializes in hypnosis. Many are certified through different agencies or organizations thought not all are.

I found a hypnotherapist registry for India

Have you tried Richard Nongard's self hypnosis videos online? They are very effective for me and the people I've spoken to who are interested in self hypnosis. They are on youtube.

You might give it a try if you haven't before. Try to find a time where you wont be interrupted or distracted. Use headphones and give his videos a try. He knows this field pretty well.

This will sound blunt and I don't want to but the clue is in the name. If you want to experience hypnosis then visit a hypnotherapist. I'm sure there must be one near to you somewhere, check local registers etc

In many peoples opinion especially hypnotherapists, all other psychological therapies emerged from hypnotherapy, the other disciplines just abandoned the use of hypnosis.

HI Aashish,

typically a psychiatrist will not have any training in hypnosis. It is not part of the their training. Obviously, there is no reason why a psychiatrist couldn't have training in hypnosis if they want to but it is not a requirement for becoming a psychiatrist. The same is true of psychologists.

Therefore you need to check with the individual psychiatrist.

What does bother me though is that all your questions about self hypnosis were answered in a previous post by yourself and yet you still seem to think you need someone else to program your mind to do it. You don't.

If you really feel the need to have someone take you through the process then why don't you ask one the very experienced hypnotists on this forum to do this via skype?

Or just buy yourself a copy of Roy Hunter's book on self hypnosis and practice it until you feel confident in it.

best wishes

This is the way I usually help folks in my practice understand the difference:

Hope this helps.
