Here is a recording of me using my "What Do You Want" approach with...

It was recorded on my online supervision group, and it's me as the therapist with a student playing the client.

It's some gentle provocation and a good example of one way deal with difficult left brain clients.

Learn this attitude well and it can become one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal.

Enjoy and let me know what ya'll think.

I like it -- Very nicely done.

I offer an alternative recipe - for this kind of "CAKE"
What do we want?
I believe that "we" want to help our hypothetical "fear of public speaking" client relate to his bodily sensations in new and improved ways... Ways that empower him instead of inhibt... The feeling that triggers the stammering and discomfort neurological loop does so because of our client's inner connections - His beliefs, expectations, stress level and state of arousal are factored into his reaction and experience. We can easily assist the client in making new, healthier inner-connections. "from now on - those "feelings" are your friend - I know it sounds crazy but when you leave the office today you WILL  actually enjoys those sensations... Now. Amazingly, as soon as you notice those very special sensations - it reminds you to trust yourself and just let it flow -- Same signal - very different reaction - The old inner-connections = anxiety and fear and the new inner-connections = excitement and confidence...Blah, blah blah...
"That's right..."

Indeed Chief M. I use that often from earlier posts you have made. Twins on a roller coaster :)

This is for the clients who have tried everything and are looking for another therapist to defeat.

I just ask em what they want :)

Great role play, Joe! Recognizing when this approach is applicable is one of the tricky discernment calls as with some personalities it can cause a withdrawal and loss of rapport. After numerous other approaches (including variations on the Chief's recipe) with a certain weight loss client, I finally accessed my inner provocateur and we found the keys to her success.

@Kelley,

Very true. Context is king :)
