The Point of Stage Hypnosis is to Entertain the Audience
The Point of Remedial Hypnosis is to change the belief and behaviour system of the client
The Point of street hypnosis - unless promoting directly one of the above - is ego masterbation
The Point of Covert Conversational Hypnosis is to impose the hypnotists wishes on the target

At a very basic level its purpose is to influence in a way that avoids detection. Now when I use it to influence clients I'm not influencing them because I want to impose my wishes on them. I'm using it because it's a good tool to get them where they want to go. In this case remedial and covert hypnosis are not different.

My two pence: The point of all hypnosis is to allow a person's unconscious mind to come to the fore while the conscious mind is occupied elsewhere.
When a hypnotist does this as part of a stage show, the audience may (or may not) be entertained.
When a hypnotist does this for therapeutic reasons, the client's beliefs and behavior may undergo changes.
When a hypnotist does this on the street, there may (or may not) be a boost to someone's ego.
When a hypnotist does this conversationally, the same thing happens with eyes open that would have happened in a "formal" trance: the person's unconscious learns within the trance and uses those learnings without the interference of the conscious mindset.
I'll grant that a hypnotist can have varying motivations for what he or she does, but not that where he does it equals having those motivations.

The poiint of Stage hypnosis, could be to make money for the hypnotist to entertain the audience, to change the belief and behaviour of the audience, to impose the hypnotist's wishes on the subjects...and ego masturbation.
Note (musturbation can lead to poor spelling!)
I am guessing at your point Jonathan, But I may be projecting.
Is there any possibility that you might have been projecting just a bit when writing this witty post?
Love and hugs,
