Mine was probably "Many Lives, Many Masters" by Brian Weiss

I've heard from many folks that "The Search for Bridey Murphy" by Morey Bernstein was their first.

What was yours?  G

Hypnosis for Beginners by William Hewitt.  I bought it my junior year of high school (1986 or 1987).

Hypnotherapy By Dave Elman

Professional Hypnotism Manual by John G. Kappas, but since that was required reading, I think a book I read at the same time was, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, by Joseph Murphy.
Back in the early 90's there was an excellent bookstore in NYC located on 57th Street called Collosium Books.  They had an entire section of old hypnosis books, some from Melvin Powers and other hypnotists of the late 60's and early 70's.  I bought about ten of these books, read them all in one weekend, and was an expert hypnotist by Monday morning.  The foolishness of being young and thinking you know it all.  I'll try and get a list an post it here later.  Regardless, they inspired me to get training, which was the best thing because many of these books contained tons of mis-information.  The three books I cherish the most are Elman's Hypnotherapy, Tebbetts' Miracles on Demand, and McGills' The Art of Stage Hypnosis.  I think each of these books defined hypnosis in their own special way.

Masked man. Great comments.  I'd love to know what those other 7 books were.

Steve, I know of John Kappas but haven't read him... wasn't that Florence Henderson's husband and didn't he work with love/passion?

But... the most important part... These books inspired you to investigate further and to become a hypnotist

That's what I'm curious about.  What book a person read first that inspired them to become a hypnotist.  What book let a person know that the practice of hypnosis is a learned skill, and not an intuitive talent that one is born with or not.  Realizing that, was a revolation to me.

"Many Lives, Many Masters"  really let me know that this whole thing called hypnosis is 'serious', 'true' and that it is something that sparks a passion within me.  Believe me, at the time I had no notion that I was to become a hypnotist, I was just interested in the power of the mind.... And then I met a hypnotist that turned me on to many other books that taught me about hypnosis.

What was the book that sparked your hypno-interest?  That's what I'd like to know.

Thanks to all who have shared.  G

Hi George,

The 2 books that were recommended to me at my first training were Miracles on Demand, and Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman.  Tebbett's book was out of print so I opted for Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman.
