The British Federation of Ethical Stage hypnotists stops it's members using 'letters' after their names because - according to an ex chairman - "There are no hypnosis qualifications that mean anything and none are 'recognised' by anyone in the real world of education."

I must admit I rarely use the one's I'm entitled to use - C.M.H., [UK] M.M.I.T., [USA] Member of the British Guild of Hypnotist Examiners. I don't bother mainly because so few people actually ask for them.

As we know some people have never done any formal training with anyone else, some even teach. There are titles you can 'buy' such as the Dr or PhD some people use, and there are in Britain alone around 157 different qualifications, and some people even sell qualification without any training.

I know one guy who has so many qualifications it fills two pages of A4 in his publicity [ makes you wonder if he ever finds time to practice :-) ]

Now I think it's important to train, or at least be open to learning others methods however, with so much abuse of qualifications going around is there any real value in having any? After all as I say to my students - no one ever got hypnotised by a qualification.

"After all as I say to my students - no one ever got hypnotized by a qualification." - unless they focus on your certificate lol.

I find like how we have blindness to those internet advertising banners, I have blindness to the Alphabets I see here After Names Especially my own lol, Though I would be discrediting the Certification courses etc, They are good to regulate WITHIN the Hypnosis community, but outside, no one really bothers, no one even knows what they mean anyway!

Experience and Training IMHO mean more than having alphabets next to my name :) I hope I haven't said anything wrong, correct me if i have, its just an opinion!

I have to agree. I think academia often dis-empowers hypnosis by hunting for evidence. Real experience in the real world is what counts and as far as I can ascertain there are no real hypnosis qualifications. I have Government Accreditation for my academy training in Australia but thats where it ends. At the end of the day I think that just like painting, hypnosis is an art, and there isn't too many Monets or Van Goughs out there

I agree totaly Leo but....

There are those who use aparent qualifications as a substitute for experience.

To be honest there ae those who use experience as a substitue for competence.

I once attended a workshop run by a guy with decades of experience, at least he'd been around a lot, and yet he couldn't hypnotise a chicken.

That's just sad.

But does the Australian government know how good you are?

I agree -- Jonathon,

As soon as a hypnosis professional starts "earning" their new clients based on how pleased their former clients are -- thery can toss their certificates.

I am sure the seasoned pros will agree that when a new clients says - "I saw how you helped so and so and if you can help them -- I know you can help me" - They are 1/2 to their goals before you get started....

Yeh I found here in South Africa I emailed some "Hypnotists" here in SA and was hoping to get help and some good people to meet and learn from, all i got were people telling my i must be accredited by this association or that association or i am nothing, and people trying to convince me to give up hypnosis as entertainment because its evil and I should be a Hypnotherapist ONLY...

A few I would say are capable hypnotherapists, but the rest sounded like they didnt even know the first thing about hypnosis yet they had "experience" and the whole ABC next to their name.

Its quite dissappointing... but is there anything we can do?

“My mother said to me, "If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope." Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.” Pablo Picasso

I became a Hypnotist... the only alphabets needed is those which spell my name, the only certificate needed is my birth certificate, True knowledge, experience and competence is all that matters, what did erickson or elman have?

I"m so glad to know you are having great results with my techniques. Some clients do get irritated--which is a good indicator of the emotional baggage attached to their migraines. But, when they get relief they usually get over being irritated.
