I just did an intake with a gentlemen who really came to get help for his wifes, as he put it, Mental Illness.
What he described was "She is either in front of our computer buying self help books, CD's ect or she is reading or listening to them, yet she doesn't apply any of what she is supposed to be learning. This has gone on for over 25 years. This started back when she was in psychotherapy. She was there for over 60 sessions and seemed to be worse off post the sessions."

Husband tells me that he recently was forced to retire, thus doesn't have the money to pay for her self help habit.

He also said that she was diagnosed with "Mental Illness" by her psychiatrist 25 years ago and he feels that she leverages this label..

She is on many prescribed narcotics. "She doesn't cook, clean, go out, do laundry,, just hybrinated in the house, looking at her books. She gets prescriptions and than will not take them sometimes"

To me,, this lady is OCD,, I have yet to meet her,,

Just wondering if anyone has successfully worked with someone, successfully that has this type of back ground?

Thanks Very Much Micheal,

I will stay with their goals,, I appreciate the wake up call, I can see, by reading this thread I was jumping the gun. I have a very good rapport with the husband and will be working with him after the holiday.

Funny you mentioned the heart shocker.. I do have an update there.. What a small world we live in. My oldest son made a travel baseball team. We were at the Clarkston Parade about to be in the parade,, and who shows up in the organizations uniform,, there he was,, he gave me a hug when he saw me,, and we walked the parade together, givinng out candy,,

Yes,, that was a great success,, and you did direct me to stay with his goals, his wishes,, his mom was so grateful and was pleasantly surprised that when they did a bathroom make over,, (he was shocked in the shower and related the shower area as to what set it off) and now he showers and is in and out of that room like nothing ever happened!! So nice to hear a parent saw great change in their son,, and he's doing terrific in school,, alot more important that how you can throw, hit and catch a baseball.

Thanks for all of the great replys,,

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend,

Scott

What's the update?
Enquiring minds wanna know!
Wow, so this guy has been feeding his wife's self habit for 25 years....I wonder why he chose to stay with her and since he has tried so many things, what he things is really going to change?

Scott, I am a little confused, which person are you referring to? The gentleman who came to see you or his wife? I am in agreement with much that has been said here...I wonder what investment they both have in staying stuck..after all, he has been just as "stuck" as she..

Some people need to justify to themselves why they feel so bad; and need to keep the status quo (victim mentality). Others need to be needed... Need to have some sort of battle to fight.

Sometimes, that's comfy.
Sometimes I believe relationships resemble the line at Disney Park ride.
You get in line...and it wraps around, you think your making progress (Disney is EXCELLENT at making you feel like you are making progress) and at the last minute you realize the line switches back and you aren't as close as you thought you were to getting to where you want to be. However, you have now stood in line for a good 10 minutes, the reward is in site (if only in your imagination)...so you hang on and wait some more. ONLY to realize...DANG! there's another switch back.
However, now you have stood in line for 30 minutes... you are more invested than EVER, it would be silly to turn back now... how much longer do you have to wait before you get exactly what you have wanted, needed, and wished for?

Investment....

hmm...
