Should I attend HMI for training?

Hi,

I attended HMI for the full year program and feel that I received very good training. The interaction with instructors and other students was critical for me. I learn very well with discussion and LOTS of practice and I got both of these in abundance. This allowed me to confident and comfortable when dealing with actual clients. I also appreciated that there were resources available to me to help me with any questions. But, like anything, it is what you put into that counts. If you are prepared to dive into it, I recommend it fully.

As for the money, do what feels right and is comfortable for you at this time based on all factors.

Good luck on whatever path you choose.

I agree, it is a lot of money Tracy. Certainly not as much as a Doctor, or Psychotherapist, or Social worker, but a lot of money. It is easy to hypnotise someone. All of the skill is in what do you do then. I took the HMI internet course for a year, and I feel I have a lot of tools in my toolbox. I visited HMI in August for an NLP course, and was able to see what is available for a residential student, and there is a great deal, if you take advantage of it all. If you are working full time as well, you may not make use of it all. How motivated, and confident are you that you will set up an office, and actually use your hypnosis training. It looked to me like HMI provided a ton of support and handholding for that 1st year of practicel. Being able to use HMI offices to see clients for $100 per month, case study classes to be able to discuss current clients with a staff therapist. I am meeting many certified hypnotherapists from cheaper methods that don't have the confidence to go out and open a practice so they are not using their training. On the other hand a friend's daughter just graduated veterinary school with $100k in loans and started a 40k job at a Vets office. Could take a long time to pay that back. Mark

I am currently an intern at HMI. I will be finishing up at the end of May 2010. After taking the 101 class for 4 weeks which was free. I took 4 weeks off before signing on for the full year. Part of my "break" was due to family issues and part was due to swallowing hard about the money. I am thrilled to have gone forward with my studies and work at HMI. Besides the classroom work, which in the beginning can be 2 to 3 nights per week, 3 hours a night plus having a minimum number of practicums (where you will be doing hypnosis on other students) there are many optional classes that you can take to gain insight into different modalities. But even beyond the classwork, practicums, case studies etc. is the friendship and camaraderie one gains from other students and the instructors. There is a mentorship program, where you choose one of the instructors as a mentor. You experience hypnotherapy from and with your mentor and have someone to go to with your questions. Also the variety of instructors gives you insight into different approaches to the same issue. I know I have made some friends for life through my association with the school that has gone beyond the training in hypnosis.

I, too, am a resident intern, in the "501" program.

I think you get a LOT out of HMI, and besides they're the only fully accredited hypnotherapy school around. The key word is fully accredited, so you know you are getting a quality education, from a school that has to adhere to accreditation standards.

The teachers are nice, and the mentorship program can't be beat. It is expensive, but when you get is immeasurable.

I finish my training in July.

I had someone tell me that HMI taught "old" methods. The truth is, HMI teaches many different methods to invoke change in clients. I'm glad I chose HMI because I feel prepared for almost anything! I have purchased DVD's and watched training from other school's programs and I can safely say that HMI offers high quality training.

As for the money, I have seen other hypnotists and hypnosis schools charging from $3,500 - $5,000 for 15 - 25 hours of training. In my opinion, that's just buying a certificate, and 15 hour programs couldn't possibly give you the information you need to be adequate as a hypnotist,

Lastly, HMI has online monthly tuition options that make it easy and affordable for anyone.

If I had it to do all over again, I would definitely go to HMI again, but I would only get my NLP training from Richard Bandler.

That said, just because you graduate and get your certificate, it doesn't mean you are finished learning. But you probably already know that.

You get what you pay for and so do your clients.

If you want to skimp on your education you are skimping on your ability to help clients.

Only attend HMI if you really want to become a professional hypnotherapist. If you want to find the cheap and easy way to do things, maybe this isn't the profession for you.

You have to be joking about going for the NLP training from Richard Bandler. Despite his name and charisma, the machinelike way he churns out 'practitioners' with low competency levels has done the 'field' he has pioneered a great disservice. There are substantially better trainings out there.

Hello! I am new to this website and group, but wanted to weigh in my thoughts. I too am a current HMI student. I live in Northern California, so unfortunately attending the live classes is not an option for me. There is another hypnotherapy school in the town I live, but it is one of those weekend seminar types for $3,000+. I like that HMI is a year long program, because while it will take longer to get certified, they are actually teaching skills that we will need. I can't imagine ANYONE trying to pick up a years worth of education in a weekend.

For the distance learning at least (can't comment on the live classes) the cost is pretty affordable. It seemed to be less than other programs, and with the monthly payment plan (currently $98 a month) it is much more affordable than other programs. Combine that with a top notch education, and HMI seemed like the best program for me.

I am also part way through Cal Banyan's video course. While it is educational and full of good information, I don't think it has the comprehensive education that HMI provides. It would, however, be a good secondary education.

Although I did my general hypnosis training elsewhere, I am in the process of taking my second online course through HMI and I can honestly say that they are top-notch in every respect. Their instructors are excellent and they definitely present the material in a very well structured manner. My feeling is that where you do your training is critical. I highly recommend HMI.
