Tracie, a hand stick is where you tell someone their hand is stuck to something....
If you are hypnotizing your kid try these little bits on for size and giggles...
Stick out your tongue... It's stuck.... Whats your name?
All the muscles in your face are going to go nuts when I snap my fingers... The harder you try to control them the the crazier they will get...
Every time I say ( xxxxx ) your face will freak out...
Stick your finger on your nose... (its stuck) try to pull it off "the Harder you try" the more it sticks...!
Ok now stick your other finger in your ear..! now this one is stuck but your finger on your nose is free...
Rinse repeat and have fun..!
This one will have you laughing yourself silly.
I think you misunderstood the thrust of my post. I'm not talking about stage hypnosis. I'm not talking about clinical work. I'm not talking about any of that stuff.
When I asked some questions about this, I was given advice that the best way to learn to put people in hypnosis is to practice. So, when I get together with some people, I practice inductions, give them a positive suggestion, wake them up, and send them on their way. I don't feel qualified to do more than that, so I don't.
I use the hand stick or whatever phenomena as a convincer. Most of these people see me as "friend" Cory or "family" Cory, and not as "hypnotist" Cory, so early on I had some feedback that they didn't know they were really hypnotized, even though I knew they were.
I'd never even envision attempting to build an entertainment show or even a simple clinical practice out of Youtube videos and forum posts. I'm furthering my hypnosis education right now, in fact, and I won't do anything other than what I've stated until I've got a good foundation.
Kallie,
Can I give you some advice from another newbie? Do it, do it, do it! I'm in a similar situation as you, and I've found nothing better for learning the basics of hypnosis than just hypnotizing people.
Now, the therapeutic part of hypnosis is completely different, and I wouldn't be able to give you any advice about what to do there, but actually hypnotizing somebody is much, much easier than you think it is. It shocked me the first time I tried it!
I wavered for a couple of months after I'd learned the basics. Between hundreds of Youtube videos, a couple of well-researched library trips and reading these forums for a while, I was convinced I could hypnotize somebody. So...I went to a family gathering, announced I was studying hypnosis, and asked if anybody would like to be hypnotized. I got two volunteers and zapped them on the spot! I was shocked that the whole thing worked!
Now, not knowing what else to do, I gave them some simple deepeners, made their hands stick together, and then brought them out with the suggestion that they were going to feel amazing, energized, and refreshed and that when they went to bed that night, they were going to have a peaceful, restful sleep and wake up in the morning ready to face the new day.
I've learned quite a bit in the couple of months since then, but I still have a long way to go. But...these friends rave about hypnosis to everyone around now, so I have no shortage of volunteers to practice on!
So my advice to you, from another new hypnotist is just to try it! Zap away! And don't let a failure slow you down. One of the guys I follow, Jeffrey Stephens, says to never waste a good hypnotic state. So make your subjects feel good about themselves and their experience and you'll never have a shortage of volunteers.
The clinical and therapeutic aspects of hypnosis will come with time and study, but that doesn't mean you can't start practicing the basics now.
Yours,
Cory
Hi John
Thank you for your feedback. It is good to know that a beginner like me can get advice and support.
I will definately take your advice. Any recomendations on which "aspect" of hypnosis might give me the best foundation for understanding the hypnotic process?
I'm thinking some NLP to help build rapport, and a few basic techniques to put people into a relaxed state and then bring them out again - Confidence building for the next step.
Kallie
Kallie,
It might be better to focus on one aspect of hypnosis until you have a working understanding and then expand into the others as your knowledge grows.
John
