Hi,

What are the requirements for setting up a hypnosis practice in Australia.

Is there state by state regulation, or is it a national set of requirements.

Any advice pointing me to the relevant places to ask these questions will be much appreciated.

I will be emigrating from the UK to Australia soon, and any advice is most welcome.

Thanks
SteveH

Hello SteveH,

Unless you are a medical doctor, psychologist , dentist or priest, keep out of Adelaide and South Australia, although things may change in the near future. All the other states are OK. Hypnotherapy is always out in left field in most states, but NSW and Qld probably have more Hypnotherapists per head than the other states as it has not been banned in those states. In Victoria it was banned for over thirty years ( thanks to the Scientologists) but deregulated ten years ago. As far as I know it is possible for anyone to call themselves a hypnotherapist without any kind of training, however you won't get insurance if you don't belong to an association. There are quite a number of small association and a few larger ones. Unfortunately egos and self interest are large and common sense thin on the ground in most associations as they can't get together to unite and become one voice. Until this happens no government will take hypnotherapy seriously. The CCH ( link on my website ) was formed a few years ago with this purpose in mind but the leadership of the AHA won't have anything to do with it. So we remain divided ( and fall ! ). The ASCH and the AHA are the largest associations. If you end up in Melbourne please look me up as I would be very happy to give you a few pointers.
Regards Daryl.

Hi Daryl,
Wow, that is extraordinary that Victoria was deregulated ten years ago. I was never aware of that.

Hi Steve

I have just read your question about moving 'Down Under'. I am also originally from the UK & moved here nearly 10 years ago (it is a great place to live) Where are you thinking of moving to?

With regard to practicing as a hypnotherapist, I highly recommend joining one of the hypnotherapy associations in Australia. They are the best way to get into the hypnotherapists communities & to get yourself insured etc

I will gladly give you the lowdown on the associations here is you are interested! (I use to be the secretary of the Australian Hypnotherapists Association) before leaving to start a family.

And yes as Daryl said - there is sooooooooooooooo much politics down here!!

Very best wishes
Carolyn

South Australia is the last remaining Australian state where it is illegal to practice hypnosis if you are not an MD, psychologist or dentist. A parliamentary report has just been tabled (April 28th). Here is a link for those interested:

Hi Steve.

I've practiced as a Hypnotherapist in Queensland since 1996. As mentioned in some previous comments, hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been hot political potatoes in Australia for many years. This situation was created by many factors, some religious, some political, most nonsensical.

There was a blanket ban on hypnosis in Queensland for a long time, this included even stage hypnosis. Most people chose to ignore the ban and make wishes for an enlightened government.

We are now allowed to practice, but there was no great fanfare and volley of trumpets when the day came, and in my opinion we're still struggling 'on the outer' fringes of complimentary treatments. Also, as mentioned in earlier posts, associations can indeed be their own worst enemies, and an amalgamation with an undivided purpose would be a wonderful thing to behold. Grand egos seem to rule and create schisms.

Out of interest, and to give you an indication of what we're at, I did a survey on Facebook. You can do this for a small fee. My aim was to develop an indication of just how many people knew that Hypnotherapy existed, and what it was utilised for. The result? Basically, less than 10% of people who responded were fully aware of what this therapy is and what it entails. As you can see, there's a lot of work to be done educating the public at large.

Good luck in your endeavors anyway Steve, and who knows, one day we may meet up here in the "Deep North".

My kind regards,
Dan.

Thanks for the info guys, saves me a lot of searching.

I'm looking at starting Hypnosis as a career; in Victoria - I'm in the Latrobe Valley, so not near Melbourne. I don't know how that will affect business being in a lower socioeconomic area, but plenty of people could do with some mental debugging. Especially after the fires, and our high asbestos related disease rate.

I've been learning from the Gerald Kein home study, but I'm not certified. I take it the choices are limited for certification, to be eligible to join the AHA. And I don't want to be forced to learn outdated paradigms (eg. there is only one induction) simply because people refuse to see the success of what even Elman did decades ago.

You could join IACT (International Association of Counsellors and Therapists)which has recently formed an Australian Chapter and is affiliated with CCH. You can also get competitive insurance through them.
