Book Reviews

What are the books that have shaped you and made you the person you are today? Which books have influenced you the most in your profession? Please share this information here with your friends and colleagues on Hypnothoughts!

This group will hopefully provide an online equivalent of your favorite bookstore, where you can browse to your heart's content and occasionally find a real treasure.

Many of us have already posted opinions and discussions about various books on Hypnothoughts, which would only require a quick cut and paste to transfer here. And if you have written a book yourself, don't be modest -- tell us about it! But these should only be the starting points for what hopefully will become an increasingly valuable source of personal and professional development for us all.

Please note the difference between the Discussion section (where you post the reviews themselves) and the Comment section (where you comment about them). It can get confusing sometimes, because you can also comment in the Discussion section about the postings of others -- and good reading!

HI Kirby.

yes I have read the Little Black book of Stage Hypnosis. It is by Richard Nongard of hypnosisgurus and speedtrance and Michael Johns a Las Vegas stage hypnotist. The outline of Michael Johns stage induction is very useful.

It is a decent book on the subject and will provide you with a working model from two professional stage hypnotists.

The other two books in this class that should be on your shelf if you plan to do stage hypnosis are Deeper and Deeper by Jon Chase and Geoffrey Ronnings Guide to Stage Hypnosis.

Hope that helps, if you have any specific questions let me know.

ahh one amendment needed after my late night posting. I said Australia is a harsh unforgiven continent. It should read 'unforgiving'. However knowing the way that the indigenous peoples have been treated over the past 200+ years, maybe the country is unforgiven. But that is another story ... and possibly another book.

What are the books that have shaped you and made you the person you are today?
Bliss by Peter Carey. I think I have taken on the persona of the lead player (Harry Joy) who is an advertising salesman who really wanted to tell stories and plant trees. The book explores the challenge of are we living in hell now? and if so we must atone for sins and be good. At least if you are in advertising there might be quite a few sins to cleanse. Peter Carey is an Aussie now living in NY.
Tree of Man by Patrick WhiteThis is the quintessential Australian story of survival in a harsh unforgiven continent. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature and deservedly so.
Which books have influenced you the most in your profession?
Quite a few to choose from but I'll list three favourites.
Eastern Body, Western Mind by Anodea Judith which is a study of psychology and the Chakra system as a path to the finding of self.
7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence by Merleverde et. al.This book soundly outlines the structure to EI (or EQ) in conjunction with NLP. And a recent addition to the reading list is ...
Hypnosis for Inner Conflict Resolution by Roy Hunter This has been a valuable tool as an intro to Parts Therapy.

I'm hoping I will be able to see Roy in October when he comes to the Antipodes.

I started a hypnosis review blog, where I'll be reviewing videos, audiobooks, and podcasts in addition to books about hypnosis.

I just read "Mass Control Engineering Human Conciousness" by Jim Keith. Everything you could ever want to know about Estabrooks is in this book, as well as how Mkultra and other CIA programs have used hypnosis and mass mind control on us in the past, as well as how they will do it in the future.. It's a terrifying read, but a great one! Like many other conspiracy theorists that got too close to the truth, Jim suddenly died of a blood clot after falling at "Burning Man Festival." He was doing a lecture, he fell going down the stairs, ended up in the hospital with just bruises, and was dead the next morning.
I highly recommend "Mass Control" to anyone interested in knowing how far people have taken hypnosis past the therapy and stage shows. The answer will freak you out as it did me.
