I am asking for advice or suggestions on working with clients who have mild to moderate short term memory loss or Alzheimer's. Is Hypnotherapy effective with these clients? and which methods are the best to work with?
A new client has been referred to me by her son. She has short term memory loss but at this point appears to be managing quite well on her own still. Her biggest issue is that she has recurring nightmares in regards to a child that she lost over 50 years ago. This child/baby drown in the river behind her home and was found by an older sibling. At that time she received no support or assistance to resolve the grief and sounds like it has been suppressed until now with the onset of memory loss.

Many thanks

Hypnotherapy works quite well with dementia clients. The UK appears to be doing much more in this area in using hypnosis as a regular protocol. Both Science Daily and The Cerebrum have had articles on this recently or in the recent past. Simple imagery with simple suggestions and extra stress reduction seems to work the best. The sooner started, the better.

Neuroplasticity is more readily achieved when combined with simple exercising using large body movements and working to get the person to attempt new things or do things in a new manner whenever possible.. Physical activity plus proper nutrition is extra important in these cases.

In my experience with my MIL, stress relief is a giant help as any agitation makes her symptoms more prominent. Any at home care possible is advised to help with daily chores.

Here are a few links- my others are on a different pc, but if you google and email the associated facilities, you'll find what you need.
