As a Member of the BC Association of Clinical Counselors I had the opportunity about seven years ago to serve on the legislative committee of that Association. The intent of the committee was to present to the BC government an opportunity to create a "College of Counselors"and, a new title of "Counseling Therapist"under the Health Professions act of BC. The unique aspect of this proposed legislation is that it does not require a particular degree. It is based on core competencies, which equate to entry-level private practice counseling skills. This proposed legislation has received positive response from the Ministry of Health and Federally as well as from other stakeholders. We are still waiting for a Minister of health to act on our proposal. It's hard to say when this will occur.

Most likely once this does occur the next step will be to create specialties, for example, Counseling Therapist [Hypnotherapy].Once passed this legislation could very well serve as a model for other provinces and possibly states. Current information about this proposed legislation can be found at http://bc-counsellors.org/general/health-professions-act

Very cool!  Has there been any reaction in Ontario? How can we spread the interest in this proposal?

Hi Bill,

As far as I know just about every major counseling group across Canada supports this new legislation. As this type of legislation is always provincial people in BC can contact their MLA and inquire about when this legislation will be put forward. There most likely will be elections in BC soon so I don't expect anything to happen in the next short while. After that we'll probably have a new Health Minister and we will start to lobby him or her. If there any new developments. I'll definitely post here.

It is interesting to see that hypnosis is clearly identified as part of psychotherapy.  I also note that Ontario is moving toward dropping the requirement to have a Master's degree in order to practice.  Things are looking up!

Very interesting development. It seems that core competency is the way things are heading, especially with the Pan Canadian agreement to unify standards.
