John,  I would appreciate your assistance.  Perhaps we can discuss the possibility of it being a fear or my ego being stubborn thus.... not following direction.

The end result is still the same thing, not following instructions.

There are many other reasons why people cannot get into a purposeful hypnotic state other than not following instructions "properly". For example, one must consider the motivation level and the physical condition of the participant. Another factor is familiarity with the experience called "letting go" that can be practiced doing things like meditation, prayer or breath work. I also find particular times of the day for some individuals can be more favorable than others. Having an unfinished list of "important" things to do can intervene with ones ability to get into the "zone".

Hi Jim:

i to use the mp3 files and the one thing i cannot do either is visualize , but i think one of the thing that you are doing is and as you say (trying to follow the suggestion.  When i do that i cannot achieve it, but when i stop following the suggestion and instead just "do" the suggestion as they sa7 it, i achieve a much closer achievement , this goes back to john's point 2. so relax and just stop trying to follow it.

Hello, I have tried MP3 files and video's and nothing seems to work. I keep thinking of what the person is saying and doing instead of following what is being said and trying to follow the suggestions. I have a hard time visulizing things, which could also be a problem.

Hi Christina:

i too are like you, i really have a very hard time "seeing" things and most time it is coming out at the light end and not going into the trance, or going very deep and slipping into sound sleep.

I woud think that i am guilty of john's point 2 and point 5,  i have heard point 2 quite a few times from other people,  we try to help it happen instead of letting it happen, and your client does to, then we are fighting ourselves.

Point 5 i think opens up some good thoughts on that point.  I will have to think about that for while, but know that could be a good reason.

thanks john

Christina,

There is only one basic reason we don't go into purposeful trance, we are not following instructions (either consciously or unconsciously).

There are 5 reasons why we don't follow the instructions:

Three are ignorance based, and the other two fear based.

1. ignorance - does not know how to react to suggestion (i.e. go deeper where? Double what?)

2. Anticipating instructions - Tries to expedite the process in order to help. (when given suggestion about taking stairs down and each stair taken will provide relaxation...they are already down at the bottom of the stairs waiting for the next instruction.)

3. Trying to help - Trying to make the reaction to suggestions happen instead of allowing them to happen.

4. Fear - of loss of control, of giving up secrets, of being embarrassed etc.

5. A protective behavior is in place - At some point in their life they were bullied or dominated and swore they would never give up that control again.. etc.

Find the reason(s), correct it, the problem goes away.

I hope this helps

John

I would love some feedback on this issue of difficulty in hypnosis.  I find sometimes that I either go really deep and check out, or I come back almost completely leaving the trance state.

I can at times in trance see things vividly, but often I have a difficult time "seeing" things.  I'm more kinetic, love the hand drop, and I can imagine more easily.

There is a concern I have been trying to address for a while now with hypnosis and EFT, it's really difficult to find movement on it when my ego is fighting the work.

I am finding that in my new practice, my first and only paying client is reflecting this issue back to me.  She too is not being responsive to my work.  I have worked with many other non-paying clients and have a lot of amazing success.  But when it finally "counts", we are both not making progress.

If you have any guidance or feedback, I would really appreciate it.
