Dear All...always remember that about 90% of men, women and children can easily learn hypnosis. Hypnosis is also so diverse in its application that you can just about determine what is your ideal client and make your practice work for you. When I started with a hypnosis based practice, I was raising four kids and lived in a town of 14,000...Auburn, California, I started and continued a practice that ran each day from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm and from 7pm to 9 pm 2 nights a week. I was making about $65,000 a year in the mid to late 1980s.Who were my clients? Mothers like me who had lots to handle in their lives and who experienced reactions to stress.
How did I get them to come to see me?
I gave a series of four free talks at the YMCA. I chose the Y on purpose, because it identified me with health fitness and family life. Every year I did a women's group called Passages that was limited to 12 women. The group started the 3rd week in September, took the month of December off and two weeks in March and finished the 3rd week in May. The group met 1 time a month for 2hrs. Many of those women also did private sessions with me. My practice was very successful and my relationship with the y led me to become involved in raising money to start a domestic violence center for women. For nearly a decade my practice was limited to women and their issues.
Then in 1991 I moved to Boulder, CO a much larger city of nearly 90,000 By this time my kids were mainly in their late teens. I got my first out of the house office and joined the Chamber of Commerce. I did free "Brown Bag" talks for the chamber at lunch time and began to develop an entirely different type of clients....men and women who were interested in enhancing performance in all areas of life. Hypnosis works so what ever you put your focus on you can create a practice out of.
It is great to have all this support in our community! Remember the world needs your skills and abilities. Look around you and see what is needed, and how your skills and interests match those needs.

Zoilita,

Thank you for sharing that story with me. What great insight to how you became who you are today. I needed that today!

Hi Zoilita,

I think your Build Your Private Practice group here at HypnoThoughts is one of the best resources for all professional hypnotists.  Since joining, it is the number 1 resource I recommend to my friends as well as new HT friends.  This discussion post in particular is such a helpful post because of the example stories you weave.  And Auburn is a beautiful little Northern CA town.  I remember visiting it with my late husband.  I am so glad to have escaped what for me was the prison of Corporate life employment where I was forever tied to the most expensive areas to live in in the country with dreadful commutes.  With hypnosis, my entrepreneurial streak has free rein to live anywhere I choose and build a practice there.

Everything you share has been so helpful and practical for building a private practice.

Thank you!

I loved your story however the scream in me says it might not work in a saturated market place. However, I think the part to learn in this story is the power and will to succeed where ever.

Tamara..that is the secret..power, will and positive thought. I love Napoleon Hill's material. Here is a great video on positive thought:
