As my prior statements on the subject mention, I have a lot of experience helping people dealing with IBS using hypnotherapy but I too am hungry for any more information on it to get better and better!

My thoughts on this is to do just that, to write a letter to local GPs including research material, articles as well as this article I wrote myself http://ezinearticles.com/?Hypnotherapy-Proven-Effective-for-Irritab...
That way the GPs get a bit more than just information they get a bit more insight about you.
I think this makes them feel more confident to refer to you then.

All letters to clinicians are opened by admin staff: that's what they employ admin staff for!
GPs will need to know more than just a patient's opinion before risking their reputation and professional standing by referring to you. They'll also need to assure themselves that you're bona fide, respectable and effective.
Have a think about other ways in which you can get this message across. Perhaps more related to validated methods of assessing outcomes.
Hope this helps.
Hi Duncan
I agree about letters getting to GPs. When I write to a GP about a client I always include other information such as success with other clients, what the programme I offer is, even testimonials. I also put a link to latest research if that is appropriate (GPs will probably not be aware of this unless they are interested in the field, so it is a bit of added value. It also shows I am serious and work from an evidence base). This letter is obviously marked private as it is about a patient, but it hopefully gets a wider message across.

I think quite honestly that most letters don't get to GPs unless marked private and confidential....missed opportunity for sufferers...I talk to my GP about it - even though he's a born-again-Christian he hasn't quite suggested that I get burned at the steak - but there is just a hmmmm!
I do know that IBS clients of mine who go to the same lot of Docs have commented very positively...but deaf ears...maybe they should go to specsavers and get a hearing test...but then again that is for another time - to rant about docs not actually listening to patients....
Hi Duncan
Good point about how long this research has been around!. Do you ever write to GPs to suggest they refer to you? As you say many regard IBS patients as a lost cause and dread them walking in the door, so we can offer something which will help them and make their lives easier!
I write to the GP of every IBS client I see at the beginning of treatment and then when treatment has finished. In the first letter I refer to the research, in the last to the success (nearly always) of the treatment. Hopefully, this helps the message get through - but it is a slow process for sure.
