Let's talk about something a bit different for a change: hypnosis in text form. I guess there are two main forms of that: text chat and less interactive written communication (e-mails, articles, stories, whatever). For now I will arbitarily focus on the second category.

I have seen several times examples of text-based hypnosis that were focusing on the use of embedded commands, often marking out the words using formatting. Some people would italicize phrases, others would put them below paragraphs and make them almost the same colour as the background colour of a website. Still others would put the word in uppercase letters.

Perhaps I'm too paranoid but I think that's a way too obvious approach. Marking out embedded commands in real conversation depends on that the conscious mind doesn't pick up on the marking out part. It's all too easy to notice italics or even capitalized words and start wondering about why they were marked out this way, especially if you can re-read the passage in question as often as you want...

So perhaps I'm more interested in other, mainly language-based techniques, e.g. purposefully using metaphors, adding a subtle bit of confusion (though too much of it might get readers to re-read whatever was said, probably ruining the effect), directing attention, framing things in useful ways etc.

I've played with this in a particular Hypnothoughts posting of mine, but since I didn't point out I was trying to achieve anything (which probably would have made it less effective) and I used rather general ideas, there is no way to tell how much of an effect it had on which people.

What's your stance on text hypnosis? Have you experimented with it? Have you had any semi-measurable successes?

Jan, one thing I thought about when using embedded commands in text is by misspelling the word...such as 'and you may find your unconccious now..."

etc...
There are a number of ways to accomplish a healing goal via email. You don't necessarily want covert embedded commands. You can use stories, poetery and even more direct commands with a willing consensual partner who simply wants to enjoy the process. If you do use imbedded commands ... use many differant marking techniques ... mix it up ... I like spaces and dots myself. sometimes one , maybe two .. and definetely three ... find out what works for you now/
How do you find out how it went ... feedback... conversation ,,, did you get the result you wanted.

As a general rule I don't believe in studies. ;) I don't like the word "commands" either. It's all suggestions. Speaking of commands implies that you've got the illusion of control over someone else. I don't consider this illusion helpful.

As far as suggestions go, I don't have a preference for direct or indirect ones. Then again, what's direct and what isn't? If the distinction is that direct suggestions are not embedded in anything, I would, as a general rule, prefer an indirect approach too. I guess neither approach is consistently better than the other, though, and I think none of the truly memorable practitioners used one to the complete exclusion of the other.
I have used text hypnosis for several years with great success. It was what prompted me to do research and ultimately write my book "the nature of trance" when I realized that "sleep", and even "close your eyes" were not necessary components of trance. (You can't do that while trancing with text IM.. they have to read your text and type replies)

Trance via Text IM (instant messenger) is very effective if necessary conditions are met: Like, that your subject is not multi-tasking (i.e. talking in multiple chat windows at once, or watching TV etc, at the same time as being tranced). I found that texting with IM is actually a trance state within itself. The subject is focused on what they are reading, and are having to interpret was is being said (internalizing) which by my model of hypnosis, defines a trance state where the subconscious is automatically reacting out outside input.

Once I have permission from the subject, they are mine within seconds. A minute or two of chatting is all it takes to establish the trance state. All I have to do is suggest.

Since a majority of what I do online is in the erotic arena, in the beginning, I usually go for effects that the subject will feel internally (i.e. pleasant sensations in an erogenous area like the nipples)

I was looking for a capture file demonstrating what I am explaining here, but I have been doing voice so much lately that I can't find one now. Text trance via IM is very real and very effective. Just think of it as the induction has already been done, and proceed from there.

I have been reading it earlier today at work. But i dont want to be hypnoticed at work :) J/K. I just took a fast look at it gonna check it out later.
The only problem that I see with misspelling words for the inbedded commands/language patterns is I don't want the person that I'm talking to thinking that I'm illiterate. lol When I see a misspelling, I think, that's wrong, so would that render the imbedded command useless because my conscious mind sees it as incorrect or does it keep the conscious busy while it is absorbed into the subconscious?
Could you give some specific examples of how you trance them after they give consent? It often takes me about 10 minutes until I test for my first phenomena (stuck legs) and then 5 more until I get the next one (them being unable to see any text typed in CAPS).

Thanks!

Joe
How true..misspelling is great to use...
I use the stories and put a direct command in the story. It seems it works better once they leave it helps before the session for them to relax. I agree with you Hugh.
Great topic
Perhaps the target audience is going to lead you in the way you imbed suggestions or commands. If your audience is uneducated in the use of this type of language then it may not matter that it is obvious as is the case with bold or italicised words. If your audience is well educated in hypnotic language then perhaps more subtle approaches and the use of metaphors is far more useful.

Have a look at those "you must buy it now" ads on the net and you'll see plenty of examples of obvious to the trained eye covert hypnosis. These advertisements are clearly aimed at the uneducated and funnily one I recently saw was by a hypnosis trainer wanting to train people in the use of covert conversational hypnosis. I guess if you'd signed up for and completed his course you'd then realise you had been entranced by his embedded commands.

As we all know it's all in the mind.

Take care and have fun
