Let's talk about something a bit different for a change: hypnosis in text form. I guess there are two main forms of that: text chat and less interactive written communication (e-mails, articles, stories, whatever). For now I will arbitarily focus on the second category.

I have seen several times examples of text-based hypnosis that were focusing on the use of embedded commands, often marking out the words using formatting. Some people would italicize phrases, others would put them below paragraphs and make them almost the same colour as the background colour of a website. Still others would put the word in uppercase letters.

Perhaps I'm too paranoid but I think that's a way too obvious approach. Marking out embedded commands in real conversation depends on that the conscious mind doesn't pick up on the marking out part. It's all too easy to notice italics or even capitalized words and start wondering about why they were marked out this way, especially if you can re-read the passage in question as often as you want...

So perhaps I'm more interested in other, mainly language-based techniques, e.g. purposefully using metaphors, adding a subtle bit of confusion (though too much of it might get readers to re-read whatever was said, probably ruining the effect), directing attention, framing things in useful ways etc.

I've played with this in a particular Hypnothoughts posting of mine, but since I didn't point out I was trying to achieve anything (which probably would have made it less effective) and I used rather general ideas, there is no way to tell how much of an effect it had on which people.

What's your stance on text hypnosis? Have you experimented with it? Have you had any semi-measurable successes?

What I have found is what is called in NLP: pre-assumptions and talking about topics, while getting the core idea from a sentence to interact with what is being pre-assumed in the former sentence, thereby coupling the thoughts and emotions together, in wich case the mind will do the work for you.

Until now I have been successful in a few cases of hypnosis via chat, but must admit that it was necessity witch drove me to intuitively do this.
I am working on a way to find the structure analysis, but can not yet say anything more, then I already did.

In a few days I have some test-subjects contacting me, and will be sure to keep u posted about the results and my findings.
I'm definitely looking forward to that, Antoine.
Sorry for my non-fluent English.

In my view, some key points are required at text-based hypnosis. First of all, rapport is important. Not only the context of the text, the response time can also help to introduce trance state. Sudden slow response becomes a confusion-like introduction. Another factor is emotion, since the tist and the subject cannot see themselves, the hypnotist can lead the subject by helping him or her to think (or visualize, etc.).
what are embedded commands

An embedded command is a NLP technique for "planting" a thought (state, process, or experience) within the mind of another person beneath the person’s conscious awareness.

Nick,
if tell you that my friend John said to me last night "when will you go to sleep little girl" I can use different methods to accentuate the command 'go to sleep' that seems to be just a natural part of a normal sentence. If it was a text I could slightly set it apart with an extra space... "when will you go to sleep little girl" or I could "when will you go to sleep little girl" etc to set it apart in some way. If you are talking to someone it can be done by marking it out with eye contact, hand gestures or tonality, or a whole slew of ways to change it just so that the subconscious(SC) mind will pick it up, but the conscious(C) does not. By using embedded commands, one can seed the SC with suggestions that over time can add up or prime it for the next suggestions you want to give...
Hope this helps...

helped alot thanks
I am just curious about the effectiveness if you tell the subject 'to sleep' directly. Is it better to tell him or her to think about bed, sheep or eyelid?

I have used text hypnosis for several years with great success. It was what prompted me to do research and ultimately write my book "the nature of trance" when I realized that "sleep", and even "close your eyes" were not necessary components of trance. (You can't do that while trancing with text IM.. they have to read your text and type replies)

Trance via Text IM (instant messenger) is very effective if necessary conditions are met: Like, that your subject is not multi-tasking (i.e. talking in multiple chat windows at once, or watching TV etc, at the same time as being tranced). I found that texting with IM is actually a trance state within itself. The subject is focused on what they are reading, and are having to interpret was is being said (internalizing) which by my model of hypnosis, defines a trance state where the subconscious is automatically reacting out outside input.

Once I have permission from the subject, they are mine within seconds. A minute or two of chatting is all it takes to establish the trance state. All I have to do is suggest.

Since a majority of what I do online is in the erotic arena, in the beginning, I usually go for effects that the subject will feel internally (i.e. pleasant sensations in an erogenous area like the nipples)

I was looking for a capture file demonstrating what I am explaining here, but I have been doing voice so much lately that I can't find one now. Text trance via IM is very real and very effective. Just think of it as the induction has already been done, and proceed from there.

John
