How to Break into Radio

Hi all,
As the new host of Hypnosis for Positive Life Changes on the Voice America Network / Health and Wellness Channel, I thought I would share some helpful tips for hopeful guests for radio shows.

If you want to be featured as a guest, e-mail or call the host or the host’s producer and tell them why you think you should be considered for their radio show. Hosts are always looking interesting guests. By all means listen to the show so you are familiar with the show topics and personalities previously featured. This lets the host know that you have taken an interest in their show and that you have done your homework. If they are interested in what you have outlined, chances are they will call you to get a feel for your voice quality and personality. Be up beat and enthusiastic. This is your chance to really shine and sell you. A little tip is to smile as you are speaking on the phone because this helps you sound happy and friendly. It always works even if your day has been a rotten one.

Yes, hosts are looking for people that are experts in their field but if you come across vocally as if you have the personality of a rock, you can have five PhD’s and it won't help you get on the radio--maybe TV--but probably not radio. Above all be you. Let your personality shine through. You don't have to be perfect, but you do have to be real. If you want to talk about a book or article by all means send a copy to the host. If you want to see how you sound, record your voice and make changes in tone and tempo to make it more upbeat and interesting. The listening audience will click off the channel if you sound monotone and down beat. Be passionate about your topic!

Generally, a host will ask you to outline and send questions that you want to be asked during the radio show. The host may think of other questions to ask as well. I like to receive the questions, mull them over and than send out an approximate outline of the show so the quest will know how they are going to be introduced and the planned order of the questions. This helps the show to run smoothly. I generally call the week before the show to chat about what is planned. I check if they are comfortable with the questions and format. This gives me a chance to get to know my guests so they feel comfortable chatting on the phone. An easy flow of conversation is important between the guest and host. Some broadcasts are in the studio but chances are with today's technology, you will be talking on your own phone. Your host will give you a number to call a few minutes before the show. A network engineer will then connect you to the host and like magic you are chatting on the phone. Let your host be your guide as he or she is in constant contact with the engineer for minute and seconds countdowns and sound quality. The show formats may vary but generally they are broken down into four segments. Your host should give you a break down of minutes per segment.
Because your host guides you throughout the radio show, be alert if your host breaks in for a commercial break. Let your host know if you are comfortable answering live call ins. If you aren’t comfortable, say so unless you know that live call ins are part of the host’s standard show format –this is where doing your homework really comes in handy. Always plan for the unexpected when you have live call ins as you never know what questions will be asked.

The major professional no no is for a guest to agree to be on a live radio show and not call in or show up at the studio. If the host has not planned a back up show and the show is live, it forces the host to play a previously recorded show. So, if you want to break into radio remember the show must go on.

Let me know what you think! You will be able to hear Melissa Roth, Paul Durbin and Brian Belenchia as well as Dr. Michael Dubi as they talk about many topics that range from medical issues to mental health issues.

My goal is to educate the public so that they can gain a comfortable understanding of what a viable tool hypnotism is for healing the mind, the body and the spirit. My show is currently found in my show archives (see link about). I am looking for sponsors and guests for my next live 13-week segment, so if you know of anyone that wants to promote an educational live Internet radio on the topic of hypnotism let me know. The show can be heard internally and has the potential of reaching a wide audience. My hope is that by educating the public we will all benefit! After launching the new show for a short thirteen weeks, the audience grew to almost five thousand listeners! So yes people are interested in the topic of hypnosis and that number is projected to grow as more people find out about the show.

You can help me support the show too. If you feel the education is beneficial to your clients, let them know about the show. Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Take Care!

Hi everybody,
I'm glad to join this group. I was an actress for many years before becoming a hypnotherapist so love the idea of talking to groups about what I'm most passionate about! I've been trying to find a free location near me where I can give free talks to the local public because I do feel that more education about hypnosis is necessary. Any ideas from other folks welcome. Good job, to all of you who have managed to get radio and TV gigs!

best

Speak about hypnosis rather than therapy - no one wants to be told they are ill ;-) and there is an abundance of market out there. Join toast masters. Tony Robbins did and look at him now, the worlds most famous hypnotist that doesn't hypnotise.

Speak Hypnotically.

I had my own cable tv show on Psychology from 1989 to 1992 ( I was younger and thinnerthen.) However since my hypnosis certification - I've done little in the public arena or the media. I'm ready to get started again.

Hi, I will be on the Greg Mantell TV show in LA, CA on Sat. 6/28. I will have 14 minutes, during which I'll be mostly talking about my specialty of using hypnosis to help people clear clutter. The other thing they want me to do is to show when traveling how to pack from 2 suitcases into one, and tie that together with clutterers. So I know I can tie those together, but I could use any ideas or tips for showing how to 'unclutter' the suitcases and pack lighter. I'd love your ideas!
