No? Why? Like at a party? I hypnotised a friend of a friend last night at a gig: I zapped him with the Cerbone Butterfly, reinduced him with a handshake interrupt, then stuck his arm to his leg to show him he was in hypnosis. I then gave him a PHS that he would feel refreshed, like he had a 9 hour nap and a 5 hour massage and woke him up. It took 4/5 minutes in total.

Why would I need to be certified for that? I learned the skills from numerous fantastic hypnotists such as Anthony Jacquin, John Cerbone, Richard Nongard, Jon Chase, Reg Blackwood ......Hypnotherapy of course is a different matter!

I know it's possible to do all those things without a certification and I have also read and watched Anthony Jacquins', Richard Nongard's and John Cerbone's DVDs and books but I feel that it is not enough to just know how to do it without fully understanding it. I think that even the most basic certification would help any hypnotist a lot.
I'm not saying that it's a "must" but it's a good thing to do.
What do you do if your subject starts to cry or scream (which are apparently common abreactions)?!

you mean, 'not very common' reactions.
i have never had abreactions,
ok, so one day it may well happen.
but i know what to do, so it wont be a problem.

You don't need a certification. As you progress in your hypnosis career, you will probably consider getting a certification. Make sure it's with an organization that is reputable. The most important thing for you now is to practice, practice, practice... but safely and with respect for your subjects.

wow i was going to ask the same question but thanks man i will also do what eeryone elce has sujested. I will pracise with hypnosis uncurtified untell i can get curtified one day but no rushing for it. XD

"even the most basic certification program" - If it's that basic then what would be the point of it? - If you are already hypnotising people to whatever level then you already know the basics.

Abreactions should be learnt about at the same time you learn the basic and are a part of the basics you need to know. - It's like riding that bike down a hill before you have learnt where the brakes are!

So if someone is already doing the basics, why would they need a piece of paper to say that they know how to do them when they are already doing them?

It just an excuse for someone to sell yet another course and to take your money.

And of course hot on the tail of certificates comes restrictions for those without them.

Learn how to play the piano first and then go for the certificates if you want to.

I don't believe you need to be certified to do street hypnosis, but it is a good opening line that will get you willing subjects. I work the clubs and all I do is walk up to a table of strangers and tell them I am a certified hypnotist and that I can make them feel like they have had 10 hours sleep, a 3 hour massage, and they will sleep like a baby tonight and that is all it takes to start the party rolling. You can take the FREE online HMI course at your own pace and you will receive a certificate upon completion. Telling them I am certified puts them at ease and gives me the credibility I need to work the crowd.

So, do you need to be certified...No...but will it enhance your opportunities for practice;;;Yes.

Certification in and of itself is not particularly valuable.

Training, education, and hands-on practice are priceless.

The most basic hypnosis certification is one you print off your computer yourself. Does that sound too sleazy? There's a website where you can take a multiple choice test, pay $65, and get permission to download and print their certificate. (Tell ya what--PayPal me fifty bucks, and I'll email you a certificate you can print. Think of the savings!)

Now, if you want to go for a program that has actual requirements before it certifies you, go to it because of what you'll learn, not because of a piece of paper they'll give you at the end. That way, you can feel proud of saying you're a certified hypnotist, because the organization that certified you made sure it meant something. More importantly, you'll get an education, and that's what really matters.

I agree with you about getting certified because you want the knowledge and experience the course has to offer. I do believe that one's objective and goal for learning hypnosis plays a part in the decision. If you are just going to do a few simple stunts with street hypnosis you might not want to invest hundreds on several thousands of dollars for the prominent certification courses available. However, basic hypnosis is not that complicated and you can learn it from all the free information and videos that are available on the internet. If you have learned the material, and their is a ton of it out there for free, and have taken the time to practice and apply it, then I see nothing wrong with seeking and inexpensive route to a basic certification. If you are going to be a practicing hypnotist than that is a different matter altogether in my opinion. I have watched several professional dvd courses on hypnosis, learned the material, and practiced the methods, but unless I am going to use these skills professionally I will not seek certification beyond the basic free certification I obtained from HMI. Having said that I also think there should be a route for those who study and practice on their own to be able to obtain certification without taking the entire course, i.e. evaluation by exam and demonstration of skills. I taught scuba diving for years and we had an experienced diver certification program where we could evaluate their knowledge and skills and provide them with certification without taking the whole course.

hey orr ! dont send that guy james $50 bucks ! for 3 EASY pmnts $19.95 I will send you a hypnosis certification, a certification as priest in my church of the HOLY HARLEY, but wait , thats not all ....lol
yeah, james is right. seems once you are certified clowns want you to join some club for a fee, of course. you look like a pretty young guy. you might try somone locally to give you tips/pointers and work with you. i was doing hypno at 15 and got no certification first 25 yrs ! theres a certain national group that proclaims to be the be all end all and is not much more than a mutual admiration society.no "authority" no how.jim hoke told me years ago that he had a wall full of them and trashed them one day, they look good in an office to impress the unknowing. none hold water.
find a mentor if you can, read alot, practice a WHOLE LOT, try to do one a day and vary your routine.wish you were here i'd use you in my show in st. louis as off stageguy. P.S. be the first of 5,000 callers for this INCREDIBLE offer and recieve a free pendulum......lolkeep at it bud !

Since 3 years now, I have a practice as hypnotherapist, and no certificates.
I do however hold myself to strong work-ethics, and judge myself by the results my clients achieve.
Although some certification makes things easier, it is not essential to becoming a serious hypnotist.
I believe intentions are the core of every choice one can make in life, and it is these intentions,and your belief in them, that can make, and break your practice.
Do everything you do, to do good, and word will get around soon!
