Hi David,

It's not just Wordpress. Wordpress is only a Content Management System (CMS) that search engines happen to like. Plus you can get a free plugin pack to optimize your content for SEO.

But, at some point you'll have to do research on keyword phrases, pick one or two your research shows both make you money and you CAN rank for, then combine on-page optimization with off-page optimization.

If what I said makes you scratch your head, then I suggest you try to find an intern from a local college to help you do this stuff.

If you want to learn how to do it yourself, I recommend going through the training from the 2008 Thirty Day Challenge. It's a lot of stuff, but you'll learn how to do the research, how to determine if you can rank in the top 10 and thus get on the front page of Google, and how to do the optimization and social bookmarking strategies.

P.S. My site uses wordpress. And these days I'm recommending to ALL my clients to use wordpress. No sense using plain old html any more.

HI Craig and thanks for the reply.

I use web CEO for optimization and keyword research and I've done well in several categories. I'm number one on goggle with www.comedycollegehypnotist.com with the key words comedy college hypnotist. But for the key word "hypnotist" I'm low. I've got several sites with link backs and I update via twitter so the content is refreshed constantly on several of these sites. The sites are relatively new on wordpress although I've had the domains for some time. I didn't get the upswing in ratings until I went with wordpress. I use both the platinum SEO and the all in one SEO plug ins. I think I like the Platinum best. What is this 30 day challange you spoke of?

You are always going to have a problem with a generic word like 'hypnotist'. It's too broad and zillions of searches can have the word hypnotist in it that have nothing to do with what you offer. It is not worth your time to try and get ranked for such a term.

You got to #1 for "college comedy hypnotist" because it's a more specific phrase and totally relevant to your content on your wordpress site. Plus you have a content engine with SEO plugins to serve it up the way Google likes it.

The lesson here is to go for battles you can win AND that makes sense for your business. If I were you, instead of trying to rank for hypnotist, which could literally take you years, I would go for a similar keyword phrase such as "college hypnosis show". But... be sure you do your homework to see if there is enough traffic to make it worth your time.
