Dear Colleagues:

I have been referred to someone who releases everything they put in their mouth as a bowel movement several times a day.  For several years the client has had multiple treatments, multiple tests and apparently not been diagnosed with anything.  Because of the naturopathic and conventional medicinal "failures" the client now believes nothing will work.

I would like to help them and have several ideas but perhaps there is someone on this group who has already had a client with this challenge.  And who has some sage advice.

Thank you

Linda

Linda - for starters, from a dietary standpoint, has the client been on a "BRAT" diet - bananas, rice (in any form), applesauce, tea/toast/crackers/starches in general?  This is a long-standing approach to diarrhea, particularly in non-diabetics.  Also, if the client has been drinking lg volumes of liquids, such as Gatorade, that needs to be stopped, and there is a documented rebound effect on the GI system, meaning too much Gatorade will trigger diarrhea.  I would also suggest that the client abstain from dairy products, at least for a while.  Hope that helps, along with the hypnosis.  Anne
(IBS-D since 1985) -- Good advice about the BRAT diet -- I also lay off sugars, HFCS, Gatorade etc ( and carbonated "sports drinks" are garbage anyway - who the hell thought loading your system with CO2 would be a good idea - duh) -- but I do include some dairy, particularly active culture yogurts - typical morning now is a smoothie of active culture plain yogurt, banana, some berries, wheat germ, etc - also calming meditations/NLP/self-psych/hypnosis/etc -- not perfect, but sure helps.

Hi Linda,

I recently helped a client who suffered severely from Crohn's disease, which resulted in the same symptoms experienced by your client. Our series of six sessions helped her to deal with the pain and stress of her illness and most importantly, to gain hope that she can recover. Part of our work was focusing on keeping her on strict nutritional guidelines, as previous posters suggested, including avoiding most dairy and processed foods. (Your client already knows exactly which foods are appropriate, by the way; your help is needed for adherence to the healthiest diet.)

You can help your client most by teaching them how to go into a "rest and digest" state often, throughout the day. I insisted that my client use self-hypnosis upon waking, before meals and before retiring for the night, at a minimum. Frequent "breaks" retrain the mind and body until it becomes a reflex to be in a healing state. Many times, hypnotists provide a relaxation recording, which is wonderful...how about making a short "mini-break" for your client? (You can listen to a sample of one of mine here:  http://www.woodshypnosis.com/free-downloads.php )

Linda, feel free to tell your client how a colleague of yours recently helped someone who was in a similar predicament...sick and tired of conventional "fails" and really just weary of living in this manner. Two months later, she is gaining weight and stepping into a happier and healthier life! It works!

Best wishes,

Kelley

Hi Anne and Granger:

Thank you so much for your thoughtful replies.  I will check the diet when we meet.  It's great to have the support of experienced colleagues.

Hi Kelley:

I appreciate all your tips, especially the healing breaks.  I know what you mean about diet compliance.  Hmm my diabetic clients are good examples (1 meal a day to lose weight, eeek)

Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your knowledge once again.  I will definitely be quoting my colleague!

Kind regards,

Hi Kelley:

Thank you for sharing your samples.  Couldnt access your downloads at first but was just able to do it and they sounded wonderful.

Best,

Linda

You are welcome, Linda! Please update us as to how your client fares...

A newbie here to put her two cents in.    I would suggest asking if there has been a traumatic event (e.g. death, a time of extreme stress, etc).   Regression might be needed. This actually happened to me after carer burn-out (both parents dying within 2 years), prolonged grieving, etc which lasted for many YEARS to the point where I didn't want to leave the house for fear of having an accident.  Interestingly last year I had the gastric banding hypnosis then started learning hypnosis myself and guess what ..... it has gone away!  There is hope!
