Following, Spam and other Housekeeping Chores

In an attempt to keep this forum focused on health and wellness issues I have turned OFF the ability for anyone other than myself to be able to send emails to the entire group. You can still send emails to each other. You can still post to the forum and to the comment wall. The only change for 99.9% of you will be that you cannot be spammed from this group. If you have a message that needs to be sent to the entire group, send it to me and I'll send it out for you.

On each of the Group pages you have an envelope icon in the middle column that allows you to either receive email notices when someone comments on the group or to block those. It's called Stop Following or Follow. If you click it to Follow then you will be emailed each time someone posts a comment on this group.

I value each of you being here and hope you choose to stay. But, more than that, I hope you choose to participate in the questions and discussions. Thank you for being a member here.

Hi Gail,

I believe in the awesome healing powers of helping my clients increase their coping skills and abilities and developing the daily practice of intentionally relaxing - This helps their inner-physicians rebalance their metabolism and often puts their condition into remission by lowering the anti-thyroid proteins in their blood. Creative stress management can help reduce the anxiety, irritability and fatigue Graves sufferers often experience. You client might need help sleeping as well.

Consider me a resource

One of the many things I really love about hypnosis is the unconscious mind's ability to take advantage of the conscious mind being "off playing with marbles in a corner" to zero in on the source of a problem and find its own way forward. This is as often done in spite of us "doing" hypnosis on the client as because of it, so my tendency is to utilize the client's natural tendency to go into trance, reassure them of their own ability to find what they need, and get the hell out of their way. Your client's body knows how to make the necessary changes, especially if you get the conscious processes tucked up comfortably somewhere else.

In my opinion, the fact that your client consciously relates the paralysis to his experience with his mother might show that he recognizes a connection that's actually there. If you think imagery is a good path, I'd allow him to direct his own imagery and use you as a sounding-board for it as he walks through it with the intention of finding a solution. Any imagery you or I or anyone might suggest won't be HIS, and his are the important set.

"He...wants to rule out any possibility that this is [a] response to taking his mother off life support..." Is that his language, or yours? I ask because language is so important when you listen, as the unconscious is always doing. If his (or your) intention is to "rule out" a mind-body connection to his condition, then he (or you) are setting your filters NOT to find it. Just a thought.

Your other client, who is "not very visual" may only be expecting a different quality of visualization than he's getting. You might want to assure him that often imagined pictures are not at all like real life, are often transparent, transitory, etc. Explain that about 40% of his brain (if he's not blind) is dedicated to processing visual input and output, so he can visualize, he just may not be aware of it. Yet...he can learn to see more and more.

People who are doing depression often feel stuck in their "feelings" -- both in the sensory and emotional sense, since we know about the chemical changes we call emotions via our kinesthetic senses. Ask him to hold on to his depressed feelings while looking up to the right and left, over and over again, following the end of your finger in a smooth motion from one side to another eight or ten times. This often tends to break up the pattern a bit. If he can hold on to those feelings while standing up, looking up, and smiling, he may not have a human nervous system at all ( :) )!

Hope you find any of this helpful. Wishing you all the best with your clients.

Hi, I have a client who is seeing me because one of his vocal cords is paralyzed. The Doctors are not sure if this is caused by a virus similar to Bell’s Palsy or not. He is under a doctor’s care, taking voice classes, has seen an Acupuncturist and has had surgery where they filled the paralyzed vocal cord with Restylane. (the same material they use to plump up women’s lips) so it will touch the other vocal cord allowing him to speak. Unfortunately, this $16 thousand dollar surgery only last about 4 months. He believes in the mind/body connection and wants to rule out any possibility that this is some type of “Hysterical” response from taking his mother off of life support last year. He is very visual and I have been using some imagery techniques, however, if anyone has any ideas, imagery or otherwise, I would greatly appreciate any advice for my next few sessions.

Also, on another note, I am also seeing a client who has AIDS and suffers from depression and exhaustion. Again, under a doctor’s care but he is skeptical about taking the medications for Depression, to bring up his “T” cell count and lower is Viral load. He is not very visual and therefore; my use of imagery is limited. Again, any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Fern, Congratulations on joining this group. This is the group in which to ask those questions. I think, however, you would get more responses if you asked the question in the Discussion Forum located a little higher on your screen than on the comment wall. Things tend to get buried here and people have a hard time finding them. Also, on the HypnoSummit this past weekend Zoilita Grant and Nick Kemp addressed these same issues. If you are a Gold attendee you can still watch their videos in the library.

I am interested in joining this group, I am not sure how to do that.
I am looking for support in dealing with a client with anxiety and incontinence due to menopause. I appreciate any support I can get.

Hello Graeme, I gather this was a hypnosis future progression workshop. If I may add that as a Life Coach we, too, do use "future self" exercises in guided imagery. It seems to work quite well and is also a handy tool. Warmly, Gail
