Thank you so much, Susan!  It's wonderful to hear about someone taking the plunge.

Hi Bill and all,

Thanks for asking me to join the group.

I've been on the roller-coaster since qualifying as a hypnotherapist in 2006. I started out working from home and have practiced from various places too.

I find it helps to join a therapy practice where you can advertise yourself and I've had many referrals from other types of therapists in the practice. It can stop you feeling isolated when you start in business if you have been in full time work. I spend my time now working from home and a therapy centre where I only pay rent when I use the room.

One of the things I discovered which had been a flawed belief was that I thought if I didn't live or practice in a city centre location that I wouldn't get as many clients. Because of this belief I spent quite a bit of money renting a high priced office which ended up being a complete waste.

I no longer believe that. People come from all over the country now and with phone and internet access the world is a much smaller market place.

In 2010 I left a part time job in the bank where I worked as it was no longer a company I wanted to be involved in. It took me about 9 months of agonising before I took the leap of faith and I was overjoyed when I did and could finally put all my energies into my therapy business.

It's not all been plain sailing and I have made mistakes along the way. Money has been tight and still is. I even thought about stopping practicing a few months ago and going back to full-time employment but I have been encouraged and inspired by members of a Hypnotherapy Peer Group I attend and I have now got over that silly notion.

I have doubts, like anyone else. When I do, I think about the people I have helped over the years and I know it is what I am meant to do, so I keep learning, keep on doing my best for my clients, give myself a bit of time and self care when I need it, and carry on.

I don't worry about competition. There's plenty of clients for everyone with a passion for helping people. We are individuals just as our clients are.

If it is your passion, don't give up.

I often stand outside, look up at the sky, and ask the universe to bring me new clients. It usually works!

Wishing you all the best

Susan

Very cool, Alicia!  I am really interested in a team approach.  After all, when you look out there, it's not like there's a shortage of people needing change work!  Does anyone else go beyond referring back and forth to sharing offices, web sites, marketing material, etc?  Any helpful tips?

Hi Everyone & Bill big thanks for adding me to the group!

It is great to read about everyone's unique circumstances. I decided I didn't enjoy working full-time (especially with a young son at home), so I encouraged one of my clients who was fascinated by hypnosis to get her certification. Now I am able to refer clients to her if I am not interested in taking them on. It is a wonderful system - everyone wins!  :-)

I love the effects that   hypnosis, NLP, coaching, EFT, meditation,Silva techniques have on people. I work  part time for now, I had a thriving business doing massage, esthetics Reiki and so much more and so I know I will have a successfull studio once I settle  down again.

Welcome to all the new members!  Relax and make yourselves comfortable!

@Ken - sounds like a great way to start:  specializing in one area and building a solid referral source.

My plan is to work with business/finance professionals, but I haven't worked out how yet.

Hi Kelly,

Sounds like your off to a great start!  Most of my work has been in Weight Loss, Smoking Cessation, Pain Control, Anesthesia, and Addiction.

That is the true reward from our work when we can help someone overcome a life challenge which is causing trauma or harm.

We all have to start somewhere to pursue our business plan and get it going.  Everything will work out and find it's place.

For those who are not yet practicing: Belief in what we do as hypnotherapist is the primary motivator, you have to let the fear of starting your business go.  It's okay to do things a step at a time to make it more affordable.

As they say "Just Do It" ~ and yes, stay positive!
